Alice Marie Nelson, went to be with our Lord, on April 1, 2025. Alice is the 11th child of Andrew and Mary Skovran. She was born on May 17, 1937, at home on their farm in St. Anthony Village.
Alice was known for her beauty and grace from a young age. Her oldest brother, Andy, lovingly nicknamed her "Dolly" because she looked like a little doll. Growing up in St. Anthony Village, Alice attended St. Anthony Village Grade School and later University High School on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis. A vibrant and talented young woman, Alice played tennis, was a cheerleader, and was crowned Homecoming Queen in her senior year.
On June 6, 1959, Alice married the love of her life, Waldo Douglas “Bud” Nelson. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with faith, family, and love. Over the next 10 years, their family grew to three daughters and two sons: Cheryl, Sandra, Theresa, Paul, and Mark. Bud and Alice raised their family on a farm in Scandia before moving to the shores of South Center Lake in Lindstrom in their later years.
Alice was a devoted member of Elim Lutheran Church, where she sang in the adult choir for over 40 years and worked closely with the children’s choir. She also shared her musical talents as a member of the Good News Singers, a small group choir that spread joy through song. Her faith was a guiding light throughout her life, and she took comfort in knowing she would one day be reunited with loved ones who have gone before her.
Alice’s passions were many, including gardening, cooking, singing and writing. An accomplished cook, she authored two cookbooks and contributed a weekly food column, Food for Thought, to the Chisago County Press for 36 years. She was also an enthusiastic supporter of her grandchildren’s sporting events, cheering proudly from the sidelines. Alongside Bud, Alice enjoyed years of camping and attended countless games, concerts, and activities that their grandchildren participated in.
Alice’s kindness, unwavering faith, and love for her family and friends will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her. As we celebrate her life, we find peace in knowing that she is now at rest with her Heavenly Father and reunited with Bud and Terri whom she missed dearly.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Bud Nelson, parents Andrew and Mary Skovran, daughter, Theresa Moris and siblings Mary, Andy, Anne, Helen, John, Pete, Marge, Julie, Irene, Bill and Dan.
She is survived by her children: Cheryl Underwood of Scandia; Sandra (Daniel) Sandager of Osceola, WI; Paul (Kimberley) Nelson of Hugo; Mark Nelson of Lindstrom; son-in-law Jeff Moris of Lake Elmo; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, her sister, Barbara Schaller, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Elim Lutheran Church in Scandia on April 8 at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Elim Lutheran Church.
