Girls lax squad dominating early

The Chisago Lakes girls lacrosse team has come out on fire to start the year, compiling a 4-0 record with three blowouts and a tight affair over Grand Rapids Greenway. And, if the team's success wasn’t enough, senior goalie Laura Carlson, who is committed to play Division I lacrosse next year at Kennesaw State, made her 500th career save recently.

The ‘Cats opened up a 14-6 lead after three quarters and cruised to a 17-9 win in their season opener over the Rogers Royals on Thursday, April 10.

Naomi Eaton led the way with four goals and an assist for CL, and Camryn Hinsch and Lauren Schmidt also each had a hat trick with three goals. Evi Reedy added a pair of goals and Olivia Rambosek had a goal and two assists. Other scorers for Chisago Lakes were Katelyn Anderson, Hailey Sandberg, Raeann Goehring and Linnea Carlson.

The Wildcats held off the tough Grand Rapids co-op 10-9 by matching them in every quarter, but earning an extra goal in the third quarter on Saturday, April 12.

Eaton, Schmidt and Linnea Carlson each had two goals for Chisago Lakes, and Sandberg, Hinsch, Goehring and Madelyn Barten had the other tallies.

It was a defensive battle between the two squads, with both goalies playing a big part in the game. Carlson had seven saves on 16 shots and GR’s Mariah Cole had 12 saves on 22 shots.

The Thunderhawks were led by hockey standouts Mercury Bischoff and Ryleigh Sherlock, who each had a hat trick.

Chisago Lakes 18, Becker 1

Chisago Lakes 20, Big Lake/Princeton 2

After the close call against Rapids, the Wildcats took their anger out in back-to-back games against overmatched opponents in the Mississippi 8 Conference.

There were stars all around on offense after the ‘Cats scored a combined 38 goals over the two games. Hinsch had seven goals and an assist between the two, Schmidt had four goals and two assists, Barten tallied five goals, Goehring had three goals and four assists, Eaton was a playmaker, scoring two goals with five assists and Sandberg and Grace Nelson each had three goals as well.

Carlson got the win in both games, but to illustrate how much Chisago Lakes controlled the game on the offensive and defensive ends, the senior only faced nine shots between the two contests, making six saves. But, one of those saves against Becker was Carlson’s 500th career save, an elusive mark in lacrosse and a heck of an achievement.

The ‘Cats will step out of Mississippi 8 play for a stretch of tough competition. They took on St. Croix Prep and Mound Westonka in back-to-back games this week, and then they’ll host Blaine on Monday, April 28 and travel to Champlin Park on Thursday, May 1.
