American Cancer Relay for Life 2025 Survivor of the Year, Bonnie Anderson, of Lindstrom, will be honored Friday, August 22, at Chisago Lake Lutheran Church, 6pm in Center City. Come, welcome her and give her your support.
Bonnie was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in spring of 2024, at which time she received care from the Breast Center’s, Dr. Bhaskar, and Dr. Wirth, St. John’s hospital in Maplewood.
After a lumpectomy, chemotherapy infusions, radiology treatment last October, and immunotherapy infusions for a year (June to June), she has been considered free of cancer much to the joy of family and friends. She feels the breast cancer team at St. John’s and later Fairview Lakes, Wyoming, provided very personal, kind care and made her feel like she could trust them and feel their confidence. All emotions are a great part of healing on a cancer journey.
Her friends, husband, children and grandchildren were very attentive especially when they would go to appointments, listen, ask questions and take notes for her to reflect on after medical care.
Bonnie was a second-grade teacher at Chisago Lakes Area Schools for 37 years, and said she loved her contact with so many special children throughout the years. She was involved on the Chisago Lake Lutheran Church Council for many years. After retirement she served as a volunteer coordinator for Enrichment classes in the Chisago Lakes schools. She also volunteered for Relay for Life, Community Meal at Zion Lutheran Church in Chisago City, and worked recently on the Memorial, Mission, and Ministry Committee at Chisago Lake Lutheran Church.
Amazingly, she keeps eight college friends close, and four of them have had breast cancer.
Bonnie supports all who are on a cancer journey and she would like to advise women to get their yearly mammograms and follow a schedule of preventative health care. Many times care is not fun, she said, but “what choice do you have?
“Take one step at a time, be brave and follow all the medical orders faithfully. “
