CL girls hockey heating up
Chisago Lakes 5, Visitation 0
Cam Hinsch scored twice and the three Wildcat goalies – Julia Wakefield, Kendall Wakefield, and Ava Aarnio – combined to stop all 15 shots they faced as the Wildcats shut out the Visitation Blazers 5-0 on Thursday, December 11 at Chisago Lakes Arena. The Wildcats dominated the game from start to finish, outshooting the Blazers 45-15.
Brynn Secor got the Wildcats on the scoreboard five minutes into the first period, assisted by Audrina Kelley and Naomi Eaton. The Wildcats put the game out reach with three goals in the second period. Zoe Neurer scored just under four minutes into the period, with Grace Shulte and Lexi Smothers picking up the assists. Hinsch tallied her first goal at 12:18, assisted by Allie Smothers and Sese Ritter. With a minute left in the period, Allie Smothers put one in the back of the net. Secor and Lexi Smothers got the assists. And Hinsch finished off the scoring midway through the third period, with Allie Smothers picking up the single assist. There were just three total penalties in the game, including one penalty on the Wildcats.
Chisago Lakes 4, Osseo/Park Center 1
Everything clicked again as the Wildcats dominated the Osseo/Park Center Stars and came away with a 4-1 on Saturday, December 13 at Dick Vraa Ice Arena in Osseo. The Wildcats outshot the Stars 32-10 for the game.
Allie Smothers scored just 90 seconds into the game to give the Wildcats a lead they never relinquished. Grace Schulte and Brynn Secor got the assists. Zoe Neurer scored a power play goal midway through the period, assisted by Secor. Secor added a goal at 12:31 of the second period, with the assists going to Naomi Eaton and Neurer. Lexi Smothers made it 4-0 with just over two minutes to go in the second period, assisted by Aven Lyckholm. The Blazers had just two shots on goal in the third period, but one of those went in early in the period to spoil goalie Ava Aarniio’s bid for a fourth shutout this season.
Chisago Lakes 6, Rogers 5
Rogers High School hosted the Lexi Smothers Show on Monday, December 15. Smothers had a hand in all six Wildcat goals, with three goals and three assists, as the Wildcats survived a wild third period and came away with a 6-5 win over the Roger Royals in a Mississippi 8 Conference matchup.
Grace Schulte took a penalty at 4:12 of the first period, and Rogers scored a power play goal just 28 seconds later to go up 1-0. Brynn Secor scored with five minutes to go in the first period, assisted by Aven Lyckholm and Smothers, to tie the game at 1-1. After Rogers re-took the lead at 4:17 of the second period, Secor responded with a goal just 26 seconds later, with Smothers picking up the lone assist. Smothers scored her first goal just over two minutes later, assisted by Audrina Kelly and Zoe Neurer, to give the Wildcats their third lead of the game at 3-2.
The third period featured seven penalties, two power play goals and two shorthanded goals. The Wildcats scored three goals on just six shots in the period. Cam Hinsch took a penalty at 3:06 of the third period and the Royals scored a powerplay goal just 13 seconds later to tie the game at 3-3. But the Wildcats took the lead for good when Smothers scored an unassisted goal just seven seconds later. With the Wildcats down a player, Smothers completed her hat trick with a shorthanded goal at 5:26 to put the Wildcats up 5-3. Sese Ritter took a penalty just 14 seconds later, and the Royals scored 26 seconds into the power play to cut the Wildcats lead to 5-4. Aven Lyckholm was penalized at 11:44 of the period, and Allie Smothers scored a shorthanded goal just over a minute later, assisted by Lexi Smothers, to increase the lead to 6-4. The penalty Rogers took with 37 seconds left in the game seemed to seal the win for the Wildcats, but Rogers scored with 16 seconds left in the game to cut the Wildcats lead to 6-5. The Wildcats managed to kill the final 16 seconds to come away with a hard-fought win.
Hockey Hullaballoo
With ten goals and 20 assists, Lexi Smothers remains one of the top scorers I the state. She is all alone in third place for assists, and she is tied for sixth in total points, with 30.
The Wildcats, who shut out the Northern Tier Stars 5-0 at home earlier this season, will face the Stars tonight at East Bethel Ice Arena at 7 p.m. .
