Chisago County residents now have a second option for proper disposal of household waste, recyclables and later — organic compost products. Chisago County commissioners recently approved an agreement with Washington County to allow for Chisago residents to use the newest Washington County recycling center, at no fee to Chisago residents. The center opened December 18 and is located near the Headwaters complex, off Hwy 61, south of the Forest Lake downtown. There is a covered drive-thru drop-off and when weather warms the 35 acre site will also feature organics composting.
Hours are until 7 p.m. Mondays. Saturday hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday and Friday the center closes at 4:30 p.m. The facility is not open during government holidays. Phone is 651-275-7475.
Chisago County residents who have a regular commute through Forest Lake, might find this location convenient for disposal of recyclable items and other “hazardous’ household products that can not go in the regular curbside pick-up.
Recycling materials dropped off here also count towards Chisago County’s state goal for not landfilling a percentage of the Chisago County waste stream.
Washington County has a center in Hugo that will shutter when the Forest Lake site opens.
The Washington County center will have a “free products” room for re-use of quantities of products like paint, stain and cleaners still in their container.
The Chisago County North Branch Household Hazardous Waste Facility is still open and available for Chisago residents at no charge as well. The recycling yard at North Branch is also accepting materials like cans, paper, cardboard, for recycling on the last Saturday of each month and during regular facility hours.
