AREA HOOPS ROUND UP

Wins are scarce for CL teams and North Branch boys

CHISAGO LAKES GIRLS

After finally getting off the hook of their 11 game losing streak to open the season with two wins, the Chisago Lakes girls basketball team struggled again and dropped two blowouts last week to Mississippi 8 Conference foes Princeton and Cambridge-Isanti.

The Tigers beat them 57-28 on Tuesday, January 7 and the Bluejackets hammered them 60-25 on Friday, January 10. Neither game got off to a good start for the ‘Cats as they had double digit deficits in both by the break.

The win for C-I was their first conference victory of the year. CL also faced Zimmerman earlier this week, who hasn’t won in the conference yet, and the Thunder were able to get a win.

Things don’t get any easier for the ‘Cats coming up, as they host St. Francis on Thursday, January 16, and the Saints are unbeaten in the conference. They’ll then travel to Big Lake on Tuesday, January 16 before hosting Becker on Thursday, January 23.

CHISAGO LAKES BOYS

The Wildcats’ losing streak hit six games when they dropped a high scoring affair to Princeton on Tuesday, January 7 to begin the week and then ended the week on a low note, getting blown out by the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets on Thursday, January 9.

Cohen Underhill had a good week for CL, scoring 22 against the Tigers and 11 against the Bluejackets, but there wasn’t a lot of firepower around him. The ‘Cats only had one other player in double figures across both games, and that was Blake Siefert’s 13 points against Princeton.

In both games, CL was facing deficits of more than 21 points at halftime, and it just makes it near impossible to put any sort of pressure on the other teams in the second half.

The boys have bookended their lone win of the year with a five game losing streak to start the season and a six game losing streak recently for a record of 1-11.

They took on Zimmerman earlier this week and will host St. Francis on Thursday, January 16 and travel to Big Lake on Tuesday, January 21. The Thunder are having a renaissance season, sitting at 10-2 and unbeaten in the M8C. St. Francis, however, is 1-8 on the year and is the only other team besides CL who has not won in the conference yet this year, so it’ll be a prime spot for the ‘Cats to break out of their funk.

NORTH BRANCH BOYS

Much like the Chisago Lakes team, the North Branch boys are mired in a tough stretch as well. They’ve dropped five straight games after losing to Cambridge-Isanti, Zimmerman and Rock Ridge last week, with the closest game being a 15 point loss to the Wolverines.

The Vikings lost 88-66 to Cambridge-Isanti, 82-58 to Zimmerman and 70-55 to Rock Ridge. They’ll take on Princeton, Monticello and St. Francis over the next week, and although the Magic are the class of the M8C currently, Princeton and St. Francis are gettable games for the Vikings as they look to snap their losing streak. The game against Princeton was Tuesday, January 14 while they travel to Monticello on Thursday, January 16 and head to St. Francis on Tuesday, January 21.
