Packers blank Chisago Lakes
South St. Paul 2, Chisago Lakes 0
Having played two ranked teams out of their previous three games, things didn’t get any easier for the Wildcat girls’ hockey team when they hosted the unranked South St. Paul Packers (17-6) on Tuesday, January 14 at Chisago Lakes Arena. The Packers shut out the Wildcats 2-0. They scored midway through the first period to take a 1-0 lead, and added an insurance goal midway through the second period. The Packers outshot the Wildcats 34-22 for the game. The Wildcats outshot South St. Paul 8-6 in the third period as the Packers didn’t take a lot of chances with a 2-0 lead. Both goalies played well. Packer freshman goalie Reagan Tracy, who has played every game for the Packers this season, stopped all 22 shots she faced. Senior Evi Reedy stopped 32 of 34 shots for the Wildcats.
Chisago Lakes 6, Princeton/Big Lake/Becker 0
Six different Wildcats scored as the Wildcats overwhelmed the Princeton/Big Lake/Becker Tigers 6-0 Thursday, January 16 at Chisago Lakes Arena. The Wildcats outshot the overmatched Tigers 64-5 for the game. Tiger goalie Brynne Emmerich was under attack all night. She stopped 42 of the 44 shots she faced in the first two periods, frustrating the Wildcats. But the Wildcats finally broke things open in the third period, scoring four times.
Senior Nora DeVries scored an unassisted goal in the first period to put the Wildcats up 1-0. It looked like the Wildcats would go into the second intermission still nursing a one-goal lead, but sophomore Lexi Smothers put one in the back of the net with 38 seconds to go in the second period, assisted by senior Kali Hanson, to double the Wildcat lead to 2-0. Hanson scored just over two minutes into the third with eighth-grader Audrina Kelley picking up her first varsity assist. Lauren Schmidt scored a power play goal three minutes later, assisted by DeVries and Smothers. And at 8:13, Kelley scored her first varsity goal. Junior Camryn Hinsch and Devries got the assists. Senior Joee Westland finished off the scoring with a power play goal three minutes later. Smothers and Hanson assisted on Westland’s goal.
