Wildcats put a scare in top ranked Monticello, but lose in OT

Cambridge-Isanti 3, Chisago Lakes 2

Wyatt Garvey of the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets scored at 11:55 of the third period to break a 2-2 tie, and the Bluejackets hung on to beat the Wildcat boys’ hockey team 3-2 on Tuesday, January 14 at Isanti Ice Arena.  The Wildcats dominated the game, outshooting the Bluejackets 44-27.  But Bluejacket goalie Jason Sibell stood on his head, stopping 42 of the 44 shots he faced.

Austin Slettom got the Wildcats on the scoreboard right out of the gate with a goal at 1:15 of the first period.  Landon Kerkow and Max Koch got the assists on Slettom’s goal.  The Bluejackets tied it up with a power play goal four minutes into the second period, and scored again to take the lead midway through the period.  Ben Kerkow tied the game with a goal at 7:30 of the third period, assisted by Slettom and Lanson Kerkow.  But Garvey’s goal four minutes later sent the Wildcats down to defeat.


Monticello 3, Chisago Lakes 2 (O.T.)

The Wildcats scored twice late in the second period to go up 2-0 against the Monticello Moose.  But Monticello scored twice in the third period, with the second goal coming with less than a minute remaining, to tie the game at 2-2 and send it into overtime.  Liam O’Donnell scored for the Moose at 3:44 of overtime to give Monticello a 3-2 win over the Wildcats.  The game was played at Moose Sherritt Arena in Monticello.

Austin Slettom broke a scoreless tie with a goal at 13:38 of the second period, assisted by Colton Whiterabbit.  And with just over a minute left in the period, Nick Hanson scored, assisted by Jacob Kletti and Lucas Ide, to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead going into the third period.  The Moose ramped up their offense in the third period, outshooting the Wildcats 12-2.  Ashton Stoll broke through for Monticello at 8:02 to cut the Wildcat lead to 2-1.  And with 39 seconds left in the period, Niklas Nelson scored for the Moose to tie the game at 2-2.  The Moose continued to dominate in overtime, outshooting the Wildcats 10-1 before O’Donnell’s goal ended it and sent the Wildcats down to their second 3-2 loss in a row.

Shots were virtually even for the first two periods, with the Moose holding an 18-17 edge.  But Monticello outshot the Wildcats 22-3 in the third period and overtime and ended up with a 40-20 shot advantage for the game.  Wildcat goalie Corbin Shandley played well, stopping 37 of the 40 shots he faced.


Hockey Hullaballoo

The Wildcats (8-6-2) will head to Pine City High School tonight to take on the Dragons, with the game getting underway at 7 p.m.  And next Tuesday, January 28 the Wildcats will travel to the St. Croix Rec Center in Mahtomedi to play the Mahtomedi Zephyrs at 5 p.m.
