Boys lacrosse team downed by two top squads; bests Big Lake
Rogers 10, Chisago Lakes 8
Despite a valiant comeback attempt in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats dropped their first game of the week, a 10-8 decision to Rogers on Tuesday, April 29.
The game was near even at halftime, with Rogers up by just one goal at 6-5, but a 3-0 third quarter gave the Royals a 9-5 lead that looked insurmountable for the ‘Cats.
But Landon Kerkow and Liam Sullivan each potted goals for CL, and they trimmed the lead to two before one last Rogers goal made the score 10-7 with short time left. The Wildcats were able to net one more goal to draw to 10-8, but it was too little, too late for the ‘Cats as they fell to 2-3 on the year.
Kerkow had three goals on the night and Sullivan had two. They were joined on the scoresheet by Jake Haseltine, Max Bobrowski and Quinn Fitzgerald. Ben Kerkow had the assist hat trick, with three helpers.
Dominic Derocker was solid in net, making 16 saves on 26 shots.
Chisago Lakes 18, Big Lake/Princeton 6
The boys got to take their anger out two days later when they hosted the Big Lake/Princeton coop.
Ben Kerkow led the way with an astounding 11 points — six goals and five assists — as the ‘Cats crushed the Hornets 18-6.
The game was just 3-1 after the first quarter, but CL extended the lead to 8-3 by halftime. But, the third quarter is where the blowout developed. The ‘Cats went on a 6-0 run in the quarter to stretch the lead to 14-3 and it was cruise control in the fourth quarter then.
Outside of Ben Kerkow’s otherworldly performance, Sullivan had three goals and an assist, and Landon Kerkow and Bobrowski each had two goals and two assists. Oliver Bushweiler and Tyson Kofler each had a pair of goals and Jacob Strand had a goal and an assist.
Minnetonka 18, Chisago Lakes 5
The Wildcats stepped up in competition to take on the Skippers of Minnetonka on Saturday, May 3, and it showed how far the ‘Cats have to go to be among the elite in the single class lacrosse system in Minnesota.
Bobrowski netted two goals and Bushweiler, Haseltine and Ben Kerkow each scored but it wasn’t enough to match the firepower of Tonka. They were led by Gabe Miller, Charlier Kohler and Laird Cassidey, who combined for 13 of the Skippers’ 18 goals.
Derocker made 17 saves on 35 shots for Chisago Lakes.
The ‘Cats, who are now 3-4 on the season, hosted Monticello earlier this week before taking on Anoka and Andover next week. They close out the regular season then with contests versus Hastings, Forest Lake and Mounds View.
