NORTH BRANCH GIRLS

The Viking girls’ soccer team (2-0-4) stayed undefeated this season, tying the Monticello Magic 2-2 on Thursday, September 4 at Monticello.

Early on, Viking senior goalkeeper Sharis Garcia-Velazquez had the save of the game when she made a point blank save in a one-on-one situation to keep the game scoreless.  It looked like the teams would go into halftime with the score still 0-0.  But with five seconds left in the half, Viking junior Reese Moryn scored off a free kick by sophomore Kinley Barie to put the Vikings up 1-0.  Monticello scored to tie it up 14 minutes into the second half.  26 minutes into the half, senior Sharleen Garcia-Velazquez intercepted a pass and dribbled through two defenders before ripping a laser shot into the back of the net to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead.  But with six minutes left in regulation, the Magic scored to tie it up again on a free kick bouncing ball, tying the game at 2-2.

Vikings head coach Josh Kopp said “This was a fast-paced game that was back and forth. Monticello carried the pace of play in the first half, with North Branch having a slight advantage controlling the second half. In the end it was a great soccer game with a fair result. Both teams capitalized on their opportunities with North Branch having three shots on frame and Monticello four.
