Cambridge-Isanti 42, Chisago Lakes 13
The Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets (2-0) jumped out to a 14-0 lead and went on to beat the Wildcat football team 42-13 on Friday September 5 at Cambridge-Isanti High School. The loss dropped the Wildcats to 0-2 on the season.
The Bluejackets led 14-0 in the first half when quarterback Kellen Meissner connected with senior Zackary Karst for a five-yard touchdown pass to cut the Cambridge lead to 14-7 in the second quarter. But Cambridge scored the next three touchdowns to go up 35-17. Meissner ran one in from one yard out in the third quarter, but the Wildcats could get no closer as the Bluejackets secured a comfortable win.
Junior Diesel Lundeen led the offense with ten carries for 84 yards, and Meissner had 22 carries for 70 yards.
Head coach Ryan Anderson said, “What I’ve liked about our first two games is that even though things haven’t gone our way, our guys didn’t quit. They are going out there and grinding all the way to the end. They’ve got that ‘no quit’ mentality. When things get a little lopsided, it could be really easy to just say ‘we’re done,’ but our guys keep at it, and I am proud of them for doing that. What didn’t help on Friday was four turnovers, which can kill you against a good team like Cambridge.
“When fans look online, they will see that Cambridge didn’t win a game last year But in high school football, you can’t really base your opinion of a team by how they did last year, because things change so much from year to year. This season, they’ve got a lot of guys with experience and size, and they like to run the ball right at you. And their defense is very aggressive, so they really put some pressure on us when we were on offense. They took advantage of their size, and they took advantage of the mistakes we made, such as alignment issues, or getting our eyes in the wrong spot. Hats off to them for playing a good game. They took advantage of the mistakes we made.”
