‘Cats chase down Tornadoes

Playmaker Naomi Eaton had four assists to lead the Wildcat girls’ hockey team to a 6-0 drubbing of the Anoka Tornadoes Wednesday, January 7 at Chisago Lakes Arena. The Wildcats outshot Anoka 35-18 for the game, including a 17-2 advantage in the third period. Wildcat goalie Ava Aarnio stopped all 18 shots she faced to earn her fourth shutout of the season.
Six different Wildcats scored goals against the Tornadoes. Audrina Kelly scored three minutes into the first period, assisted by Eaton and Cam Hinsch, to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats started the second period on a penalty kill, and Brynn Secor scored a shorthanded goal one minute into the period, with the single assist going to Eaton. Eaton also assisted on a goal by Lexi Smothers midway through the period to put the Wildcats up 3-0. The Wildcats added three goals in a span of five minutes in the third period, helped along by a couple of Anoka penalties, to turn the game into a rout. Sese Ritter scored a power play goal at 10:42, assisted by Allie Johnson and Secor. Just over a minute later, Zoe Neurer added another power play goal, with the assists going to Aven Lyckholm and Lexi Smothers. And Grace Schulte scored at 15:32, assisted by Eaton, to make the final score 6-0.

Lexi Smothers is tied for fourth in the state with 26 assists for the 11th-ranked Wildcats.
The Wildcats will head to Princeton First Bank & Trust Arena tonight to take on the Princeton/Big Lake/Becker Tigers at 6 p.m. Next Tuesday, January 20, the Wildcats travel to Doug Woog Arena to play the South St. Paul Packers at 6:30 p.m.
