Wildcat wrestlers brave cold temps to compete at a high level last week
Mahtomedi Triangular
The Wildcat wrestling team competed in a triangular at Mahtomedi on Wednesday, January 21. They lost to Class AAA Eastview 61-11, before falling to the host team, Mahtomedi, 42-33. The Wildcats sent a nearly full lineup against both teams. Only two Wildcat wrestlers scored against Eastview. Corbin Pearl (107) won by forfeit, and Bramnick Malchow (152) won by a 17-1 technical fall over Andrew Petter at 2:55 of their match. Against section opponent Mahtomedi, the Wildcat for forfeited at two weights, which means the Wildcats actually came out ahead 33-30 in contested matches. It was a good showing against a Mahtomedi team that features two wrestlers in the Class AA top ten.

St. Croix Falls Girls Interstate Classic
The Wildcat girls took seven wrestlers across the border for the St. Crois Falls Interstate Classic last Friday, January 23, and finished sixth out of 16 teams. Libby Carlson took the championship at 235 pounds, and Ruby Schlender came in second at 165 pounds.
There were only two wrestlers in the 235-pound class, so Carlson and her opponent, Savannah Whiting of Prescott, were set up to wrestle the best two out of three to determine the champion. Carlson dominated Whiting in their two matches, not allowing Whiting a single point in either one. Carlson pinned Whiting at 2:27 in their first match. She needed less than half that time in the second match, winning by fall over Whiting in 1:11 to claim the championship.
Schlender needed just 35 seconds to pin Addison Habeck of St. Croix Central in her opening/semifinal match. In the finals, Schlender trailed Evelyn Fugate of Unity 8-4 after the first period, and the score stayed that way until Fugate took Schlender down for three points at 4:22. Fugate pinned Schlender at 5:27, and Schlender had to settle for second place.
