Wildcats mop up on two South Suburban schools

The Wildcat boys’ hockey team has been playing its best hockey of the season in the past few weeks.  They had a seven-game unbeaten streak (6-0-1) going before they lost 4-1 to the fifth-ranked Mahtomedi Zephyrs 4-1 this past Tuesday.

Chisago Lakes 5, Simley 0

Colton Horak had his first hat trick as a Wildcat and Austin Slettom had three assists as the Wildcats steamrolled the Simley Spartans 5-0 on Tuesday, January 20 at Chisago Lakes Arena.  The Wildcats had 26 shots on goal in the first period on their way to a 62-22 shot advantage for the game. Goalie Jacob Schaeppi stopped all 22 shots he faced for his fifth shutout of the season.

Cooper Toepper scored just over a minute into the first period, assisted by Nolan LeVasseur and Slettom, to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Horak scored twice in the second period. Jacob Kletti and Ryder Danielson got the assists on Horak’s first goal, and Slettom and Colton Whiterabbit assisted on the second one. Toepper scored again at the halfway point of the third period, assisted by Whiterabbit and Quin Ryan.  And Horak completed his hat trick with two-and-a-half minutes left in the game, with Kletti and Slettom picking up the assists. Just two penalties were called in the fast-paced game.

Chisago Lakes 3, Two Rivers 1

Goalie Jacob Schaeppi stopped 30 of the 31 shots he faced to lead the Wildcats to a 3-1 win over the Two Rivers Warriors on Saturday, January 24 at West St. Paul Arena. Two Rivers outshot the Wildcats 31-24 for the game, and peppered Schaeppi with 14 of those shots in the third period.

The Warriors opened the scoring with a power play goal at 7:28 of the second period.  Three-and-a-half minutes later, Colton Horak answered with a power play goal to tie the game at 1-1. Jacob Kletti and Colton Whiterabbit got the assists. The Wildcats made the most of their four shots on goal in the third period. Ashton Warnke scored three minutes in to give the Wildcats their first lead of the game at 2-1, assisted by Dylan Cuffel and Carson Purdy. And the Wildcats got some insurance at 10:25 of the final period when Austin Slettom put one in the back of the net, with the assists going to Kletti and Horak, to make the final score 3-1.

Mahtomedi 4, Chisago Lakes 1

The Mahtomedi Zephyrs outshot the Wildcats by a two to one margin on their way to a 4-1 win this past Tuesday night at Chisago Lakes Arena.

There were just five penalties called in the game, but four of them were on the Wildcats, and the Zephyrs scored on two of their four power plays.

Hockey Hullaballoo
