Barbara Piehl
Barbara Lucille Piehl, 72, of North Branch, MN, passed away on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at Ecumen Assisted Living in North Branch. Barb was born on July 28, 1953, to Elmer and Cecilia Karas and grew up on the family farm in Pine City. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated from Pine City High School in 1971. Continuing her education, she earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Minnesota. Barb also studied abroad in Denmark for nine months where she was able to explore Europe and parts of Russia.
On December 3, 1977, she married Russel Piehl, the love of her life, and together they celebrated 48 years of marriage. Barb and Russ raised three children: Cindy, Gary, and Glen.
Barb enjoyed a distinguished 34-year career as an Extension Educator in the 4-H Youth Development program. Known for her dedication and work ethic, she received numerous awards and published several works over her career. Her favorite pastimes included fishing and spending time at the family cabin on Blackwater Lake, gardening, reading, knitting, and needlework such as cross stitch and hardanger embroidery.
Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Cecilia Karas. She is survived by her husband, Russel Piehl; children Cindy (Daniel) Mellum, Gary Piehl, and Glen (Ashley) Piehl; grandchildren Ryanne, Blake, Austin, Beylen, Cooper, Claire, and Jack; her brother David (Jody) Karas; as well as many nieces and nephews.
There will be a celebration of life open house June 27, 2026, 2-6 PM at the Chisago County Senior/Community Center at 38790 6th Avenue, North Branch, MN 55056
