Wyoming City Council buys new warning siren, hears from citizens displeased with cannabis businesses

The City of Wyoming is getting a new warning siren at a site on Innsbruck Avenue.

The council, with member Schilling absent and member Nanko-Yeager participating remotely on-line, approved the expense of about $34,500 to purchase and install the warning siren.

Staying on the issue of public safety;  council heard a couple citizens comment during open microphone about concerns they have wth cannabis business in the city.

The first speaker said Wyoming would be better-off without any cannabis products in town and found fault with the way the state has set up priority licensing pre-requisites.  “Social equity” applications are meant to balance applicants’ prior experiences, as a class of the population,  involving negative impacts from marijuana culture.

The second speaker told council marijuana “ruined his life” having begun using it as a teen. He said the effect of consuming it is you do not care to better your life.

He asked about the city’s municipal marijuana licensure plan that the council earlier approved to be pursued.

The staff advised that the muncipal-run dispensary has made zero progress, but the city did work to obtain licensing.  There has not been a location identified for a city-owned cannabis business, however.

Police Chief and Public Safety Director Neil Bauer then spoke briefly about the food drive underway now to help stock food shelves.

The Wyoming and Forest Lake police departments are having a friendly contest to see who can collect the most non-perishable food donations.  Local officers will be stationed to collect at Bruce’s IGA in the near future— or you are invited to donate items directly at city hall or the law enforcement offices on Wyoming Trail.

The Wyoming Lions were also acknowledged for the donation of a bench, valued about $1,500.

Council also scheduled a work session to focus on the 25 year old ladder truck and if it must be replaced or can be rehabilitated.  The session is March 17 at 5:30 p.m. in council chambers.

Wyoming residents are reminded there are two open seats on the parks group.
