Chisago Lakes 6, Cambridge-Isanti 3
The Wildcats scored four runs in the top of the first inning and went on to beat the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets 6-3 on Monday, April 20 at Cambridge-Isanti High School. Starting pitcher Kellen Meissner went five innings. He allowed three runs – two earned – on four hits, walked two and struck out eight to get the win. Luke Leadholm pitched two innings of scoreless relief to get the save, walking one and striking out three.
Cole Stilp singled to open the top of the first. Meissner walked and Lucas Weinzetl singled to load the bases. Trent Travis singled to drive in the first run of the game. Quinn LeVasseur grounded out to drive in a run. Nick Bjelland reached on an error, with one more run scoring. And Baylor Brown grounded out to third to drive in courtesy runner Kaiden Melquist with the fourth run of the inning. The Bluejackets responded with two runs in the bottom of the first to cut the Wildcat lead to 4-2. In the bottom of the third, an error, a single and a double play resulted in another run for the Bluejackets to cut the lead to 4-3. Bjelland singled to left to open the top of the sixth. Brown doubled to center to drive in Bjelland. One out later, Carter Anderson doubled to center to score Brown, making the score 6-3. Reliever Leadholm worked his magic in the sixth and seventh innings to seal the win for the Wildcats.
Chisago Lakes 4, Zimmerman 3 (8 innings)
Quinn LeVasseur hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Wildcats a 4-3 win over the Zimmerman Thunder on Tuesday, April 21 at Chisago Lakes High School. Colton Horak picked up the win with two innings of scoreless relief.
The Wildcats got on the scoreboard first in this one. Zander Bleymeyer reached on an error with two outs in the bottom of the second, and Baylor Brown doubled to center to drive in Bleymeer, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. The Thunder scored three runs in the top of the fourth, highlighted by a two-run homer, to take a 3-1 lead. Brown double to lead off the bottom of the inning. Two outs later, Kellen Meissner lined a two-run homer over the left field wall to tie the game 3-3. The Wildcats came close to ending in the seventh. But with two on and two out, Meissner flew out to center, sending the game into extra innings.
Lucas Weinzetl reached on an infield singled to open the bottom of the eighth. Trent Travis walked, and Nick Bjelland laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third. Xander Breitenbach popped out to short for the second out of the inning. LeVasseur worked the count to 3-2 and fouled off the next two pitches. He beat out a grounder to short for a single and Weinzetl crossed the plate with the winning run.
Weinzetl started the game for the Wildcats. IN Six innings, he allowed three earned runs on five hits, walked three and struck out three. Horak didn’t allow any hits, walked two and stuck out one in picking up the win.
Baseball Banter
The Wildcats (4-5) will host the Becker Bulldogs this afternoon at 5 p.m. at Chisago Lakes High School. Tomorrow, they will head to Frandsen Bank & Trust Field at Rock Ridge High School in Virginia, Minn. to take on the Rock Ridge Wolverines at 4 p.m. And next Tuesday, May 5 they will host the North Branch Vikings at Pat Collins Field at Chisago Lakes High School at 5 p.m.
