CL falls flat in section gauntlet
Cloquet 7, Chisago Lakes 1
The Cloquet Lumberjacks baseball team scored four runs in the first inning and went on to beat the Wildcats 7-1 Monday, May 11 at Chisago Lakes High School. Cloquet loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first inning. Wildcat pitcher Zander Bleymeyer hit the next batter to force in a run. A run scored on a wild pitch. After the batter struck out, the following batter grounded a two-run single to left to make it 4-0. The Lumberjacks added another run in the top of the second to make it 5-0. Quinn LeVasseur drove in a run with a bases-loaded, two out single in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 5-1. The Wildcats put at least one runner on base in each of the last three innings but came up empty. Cloquet added single runs in the sixth and seventh to make the final 7-1.
Duluth Denfeld 2, Chisago Lakes 1
The Duluth Denfeld Hunters led 2-1 after the first inning and that was all the scoring in the game as the Hunters beat the Wildcats 2-1 Wednesday, May 13 at Chisago Lakes High School. Starter Lucas Weinzetl walked the first batter of the game He stole second. The next batter grounded the ball to second baseman Baylor Brown, bur reached on Brown’s error as a run scored. A single and an error by shortstop Cole Stilp pushed across another run to make it 2-0. Stilp doubled to left to open the bottom of the inning. Kellen Meissner flew out to right, and Stilp tagged and advanced to third. Weinzetl grounded to second, scoring Stilp to cut the Denfeld lead to 2-1. After Quinn LeVasseur singled, Trent Travis struck out to end the inning. The Wildcats had 12 baserunners in the next six innings but did not attempt to steal a base or bunt a runner along. In the bottom of the sixth, Zander Bleymeyer and Carter Anderson singled with two outs. Stilp singled to left. Bleymeyer tried to score on a single by Stilp but was thrown out at the plate to keep the score at 2-1. A walk and an error put Wildcats on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Nick Bjelland grounded out..
Hermantown 3, Chisago Lakes 0
The Hermantown Hawks scored two runs in the third and one in the fifth, and it was more than enough as they shut out the Wildcats 3-0 on Friday, May 15 in Hermantown. A two-out triple in the bottom of the third drove in the first run of the game. That runner scored on a passed ball to make it 2-0. In the bottom of the fifth, a single, a stolen base, a ground out and an error led to a Hawk run to make it 3-0. Starting pitcher Kellen Meissner walked the next batter. Zander Bleymeyer came in to relieve and walked the next batter. But Bleymeyer picked the runner off second to end the inning. Trent Travis and Xander Breitenbach singled with two outs in the top of the sixth, but Kiden Melquist grounded out to end the inning. Carter Anderson singled with one out in the top of the seventh, but Cole Stilp grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game. Meissner went 4 2/3 innings. He gave up three runs – one earned – on eight hits, walked five and struck out three. In 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, Bleymeyer walked two and struck out one.
Princeton 10, Chisago Lakes 3
The Princeton Tigers scored at least one run for five innings in a row, including a five-run third inning, and beat the Wildcats 10-3 Monday, May 18 at Mark Park in Princeton. The Wildcats burst out of the gates with three runs in the top of the first inning. Cole Stilp walked to lead off the game and moved to second on a passed ball. One out later, Lucas Weinzetl reached on a bunt single. Quinn LeVasseur doubled to left to drive in both runners. Xander Breitenbach walked and Trent Travis reached on an error to load the bases. After Baylor Brown struck out for the second out, Zander Bleymeyer singled to drive in LeVasseur, but Travis was thrown out on the basepaths and the Wildcats led 3-0. Trailing 3-1 entering the bottom of the third, the Tigers scored five runs on six hits, a walk, and an error to take a 6-3 lead. The Wildcats had just two baserunners the rest of the way as they lost 10-3.
