Pearson smashes shot put record during M8C championships
Mississippi 8 Conference Championships
The Wildcats hosted the Mississippi 8 Conference Track and Field Championships at Chisago Lakes High School on Wednesday, May 20. The girls came in second, just three points behind second place Monticello. The boys finished fifth. The Wildcats’ only first place individual finish at the meet was senior Mariana Cooksley, who heaved a personal best 40’5.5” in the shot put. The Wildcats swept the top two spots in the shot put, as sophomore Madison Eagle threw a personal best 37’1.5” to finish second. Eagle also finished second in the discus, with a throw of 114’6”. For the boys, Will Pearson’s throw of 55’4” set the school record in the shot put, breaking the mark of 53’1” set by Andrew Koehler in 2021.
Girls
Sophomore Annika Hall came in second in both the 800-meter run, in a season best 2:25.02, and in the 1600-meter run, in a season-best 5:50.14. Sophomore McKaylie Malek finished ran to a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 16.74 seconds. Sophomore Mikenna Fritzke jumped 4’10” to claim third place in the high jump. Sophomore Averiana Gellerman came in fourth in the 400-meter run with a personal best time of 1:03.53. She finished just a tenth of a second ahead of sophomore teammate Kianna Osmundson, whose personal best time of 1:03.63 gave her a fifth-place finish. In addition to her triumph in the shot put, Cooksley threw 112’3” in the discus, good for fourth place.
Boys
Most of the boys’ points came from the field events. In addition to his record-setting shot put throw, Pearson threw a personal best 163’5” in the discus, good for second place. Everett Otte’s personal best throw of 142’5” put him in fourth place in the discus. And Otte threw 47’8” in the shot put, good for third place. The boys’ next two highest finishes were in fifth place: senior Cohen Underhill, who jumped a personal best 21’6.5” in the long jump, and junior Cian O’Halloran, with a personal best time of 10:09.12 in the 3200-meter run.
Track Tidbits
The Section 7AA Tournament will be held at Rock Ridge High School, with the preliminaries taking place on Wednesday, May 27 and the finals taking place on Saturday, May 30.
