‘Cats team season over in semis
Chisago Lakes opened its Section 4AA girls tennis tournament run in dominating fashion, but the Wildcats couldn't carry that momentum into the next round as their season came to an end against Totino-Grace.
The Wildcats made quick work of Fridley on Tuesday, October 6, sweeping all seven matches without dropping a set. However, the competition got tougher two days later, when the Eagles handed Chisago Lakes a 4-3 defeat on Thursday, October 8, ending the Wildcats' run in the team portion of the section tournament.
Chisago Lakes 7, Fridley 0
There wasn't much drama in the Wildcats' section opener, as Chisago Lakes controlled the match from start to finish, surrendering just one game across the seven matches.
The Wildcats were particularly dominant in singles, where all four players recorded perfect 6-0, 6-0 victories.
At first singles, sophomore Claire Mickelson blanked Fridley's Harper Helmer, while fellow sophomore Harlow Larson did the same against Marta McCoy at second singles. Senior Kinsley Daugs continued the walloping with matching 6-0 sets against Leah Martin at third singles.
Sophomore Ella Smith completed the singles sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Karema Husien at fourth singles.
The doubles teams were nearly as impressive, with two of the three Wildcat pairings also recording shutouts.
At first doubles, seniors Anna Hageman and Elsa Behnke cruised past Clare McCoy and Anna Gbadoe 6-1, 6-0 in the only match of the day in which Fridley managed to win a game.
The second doubles pairing of seniors Annika Smith and Makenna Thorsen rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Sara Pozo and Kayla Whetston, while junior Lilly Smith and sophomore Alexa Thorsen completed the sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Anyssa Smith and Monce Amezcua.
Totino-Grace 4, Chisago Lakes 3
The Wildcats found themselves in a much tougher battle against the Eagles, who were able to turn the tables on Chisago Lakes by winning four of the seven matches.
Despite the team defeat, Chisago Lakes received another strong performance from Mickelson, who continued her impressive sophomore campaign with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Camila Munoz at first singles.
The Wildcats' other singles victory came from Smith, who followed up her shutout performance against Fridley with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 victory over Leah Bourn at fourth singles. Like Mickelson, Smith finished the two-match section tournament run undefeated.
Chisago Lakes also received another strong performance from the first doubles combination of Hageman and Behnke, who were nearly untouchable throughout the two-match stretch.
The senior duo turned in an even more impressive performance against Totino-Grace, shutting out Adri Cognetta and Noelle Roncari 6-0, 6-0.
Unfortunately for Chisago Lakes, the Eagles had the upper hand throughout the rest of the lineup.
At second singles, Totino-Grace's Ava Schlichting defeated Larson 6-1, 6-1, while Skylar Edmon knocked off Daugs 6-2, 6-2 at third singles.
The Eagles also captured the final two doubles matches, although Chisago Lakes put up a fight at second doubles.
Annika Smith and Thorsen fell to Bella Vecellio and Ella Gallagher 6-0, 7-5, battling back to make the second set competitive before the Eagles closed out the victory.
At third doubles, Lilly Smith and Alexa Thorsen were defeated by Audrey Weeks and Annika Gustafson 6-2, 6-1.
The loss brought an end to the Wildcats' team tournament run. Although Chisago Lakes couldn't advance past Totino-Grace, the Wildcats finished their section action with several encouraging individual performances, particularly from Mickelson, Smith and the Hageman-Behnke doubles combination, and as individual sections gets underway this week, they could fare well.
