For the second straight year, the North Branch girls tennis team found itself one win away from a trip to the state tournament, but unfortunately for the Vikings, a powerful Rock Ridge squad was standing in their way again.

The Wolverines ended North Branch's team tournament run with a convincing 7-0 victory in the Section 7AA championship match, sweeping all seven matches in straight sets to earn the section's state tournament berth.

The Vikings had worked their way into the finals with victories over Duluth Denfeld and Grand Rapids, but they couldn't find an answer for a Rock Ridge lineup that was strong from top to bottom.

In singles action, senior Rebekah Wurdemann fell to Mayme Scott 6-3, 6-1 at the top spot, while sophomore Evelyn O'Donnell dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Ellie Dimberio at second singles. Eliana Smit rounded out the singles lineup with a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Alice Johnson.

The doubles lineup didn't fare much better, as Charlotte Santjer and Julia Schlagel fell 6-2, 6-3 at first doubles, Ainslee Hunter and Sophia Podoll lost 6-3, 6-1 at second doubles, and Brianna Bjerketvedt and June Peterson dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision at third doubles.

Despite the disappointing finish, it was another successful team season for head coach Joel Santjer and the Vikings, who have now reached the Section 7AA championship match in back-to-back seasons.

Individual sections

Although the team portion of the season came to an end, several North Branch players continued to make noise in the individual section tournament, including a pair of big upsets.

O'Donnell provided one of the biggest surprises of the tournament when she stunned top-seeded Olivia Theien of Hibbing 6-0, 6-0 in singles action. The sophomore's impressive victory sent her into the next round, where she eventually fell to fifth-seeded Mayme Scott of Rock Ridge 6-3, 6-3.

Wurdemann, meanwhile, has kept her individual state tournament hopes alive with a pair of convincing victories to advance to the section semifinals. The senior opened with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Cloquet's Daisie Gustafson before dispatching Princeton's Emily White 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

The Vikings also found some success in doubles, where Hunter and Smit won their opening-round match against a Grand Rapids pairing in three sets before falling to a Rock Ridge duo in the quarterfinals.

But perhaps the biggest surprise came from the ninth-seeded combination of Santjer and Schlagel, who have put together an impressive run of their own.

The senior duo opened with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 victory over the eighth-seeded team from Hermantown before pulling off another massive upset in the quarterfinals against the top-seeded pairing from Hibbing.

After dropping the opening set 6-1, Santjer and Schlagel completely turned the match around, blanking the Hibbing duo 6-0 in the second set before finishing off the upset with a 6-3 victory in the decisive third set.

The win sent the North Branch pairing into the section semifinals and kept their hopes of an individual state tournament berth alive, giving the Vikings two entries still in contention despite their team season coming to an end.
