CL just edged by Becker, Casey claims another mark
Chisago Lakes put together a strong performance in the pool, but Becker's depth proved to be just enough as the Bulldogs edged the Wildcats 96-90 in a tightly contested girls swimming and diving dual meet on Tuesday, October 20 at Chisago Lakes High School.
The Wildcats picked up five event victories, including a pair of individual wins from Kaia Casey, but Becker was able to build an early advantage and hold off a late Chisago Lakes charge.
Casey continued her impressive season with victories in both of her individual events, including a record-breaking performance in the 100 butterfly. She shattered her own school record with a blistering time of 59.28 seconds, eclipsing her previous mark of 1:00.13 by 0.85 seconds and breaking the one-minute barrier for the first time. The performance was good enough for a dominant first-place finish, more than six seconds ahead of Becker's Myka Maksimenko, who took second in 1:05.73.
Casey also cruised to victory in the 200 freestyle, touching the wall in 1:55.43, more than three seconds ahead of Becker's Grace Mork. Teammate Eloise Arntson added a third-place finish in 2:01.20.
Arntson picked up an individual victory of her own in the 500 freestyle, winning comfortably with a time of 5:25.80. The Wildcats also got a third-place finish from Aria Nelson in 6:09.78.
Ingrid Olson turned in a pair of strong performances in the sprint freestyle events, narrowly missing victories in both. She finished second in the 50 freestyle in 26.23 seconds, just five-hundredths of a second behind Maksimenko, and was runner-up in the 100 freestyle in 56.51, only 0.27 seconds behind Becker's Kandell Hagen.
The Wildcats also had a strong showing in the 100 breaststroke, where Olivia Cunningham finished second in 1:11.57, just 0.33 seconds behind Becker's Izza Mork. Brooke Lind was right behind Cunningham in third place with a time of 1:12.42. Lind also added a runner-up finish in the 200 individual medley, clocking a 2:22.54.
Chisago Lakes was particularly impressive in the relay events, winning two of the three races.
The quartet of Olson, Avery MacIver, Arntson and Casey captured first place in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:44.03, edging Becker's top team by just 0.77 seconds.
The Wildcats closed the meet on a high note in the 400 freestyle relay, as Olson, Lind, Arntson and Casey combined for a convincing victory in 3:48.30, more than 16 seconds ahead of Becker's top team.
Chisago Lakes also nearly pulled off a victory in the opening 200 medley relay, with the team of Nelson, Cunningham, Annika Coleman and MacIver finishing second in 1:58.20, just 0.13 seconds behind Becker.
