Vikings grind out first win over Rock Ridge
North Branch didn’t hang 50 points on Rock Ridge last week like they have done the past two years, but they did exactly what they needed to do to bounce back from their season opening loss at Pequot Lakes.

We’re getting into the thick of fall season here in Minnesota. Granted when you’re reading this column, it’s going to be almost 80 degrees outside, but we’ve had a nice, brisk weekend and after this little mini heatwave, we’ll be back into the fall temps in no time.

For the second straight year, the North Branch football team dropped their season opener to a very talented and disciplined Pequot Lakes squad Thursday, August 29 in Pequot Lakes.
‘Cats already heating up
After a slow start to the season, dropping a sweep to the South St. Paul Packers Thursday, August 22 and losing their first two games in the Rush City tournament to Litchfield and Pine River-Backus, the Chisago Lakes volleyball team has turned it around a bit as of late.

The start of the high school soccer season tells us that summer is just about over and winter gets closer every day. And it’s not likely we’re going to get a mild winter like we had last year. All four local high school soccer teams began play last week, and here are the results.
It’s big red time
Tomatoes have had a thriving growing season, and it’s time to reap the rewards. They have been coming up aplenty over the past few weeks, and it’s time to start turning them into some delicious recipes!

It’s a potpourri of recipes this week
I couldn’t draw up a ton of inspiration this week for a theme, so I kind of went with a grab bag of different recipes. I’ve included another corn dip one even though I did Mexican Street Corn Dip a few weeks ago, but I’ve been on a corn dip kick this summer, and this one was also outrageously good, so I just had to include it.

Youngster Kim wins Chisago Lakes Triathlon in debut
Former standout University of Minnesota swimmer Nathan Kim, only 22 years old, had a smashing debut in the Chisago Lakes Triathlon on Sunday, July 28, winning the race by nearly three minutes and showing his prowess in the water is a big advantage for him.
Wasting away in Zucchini-ville
We are ripe and bountiful in our zucchini season, and it’s one of my favorite vegetables to grow because it’s so hearty, comes in quick and is very versatile.

The postseason magic that carried the North Branch softball team through an unblemished section run came to an abrupt and powerful end at the hands of the Mankato East Tigers in the first round of the state softball tournament on Wednesday, June 5 at Caswell Park in North Mankato.

Girls lax team shocked by Centennial in semis
This was the season the Chisago Lakes girls lacrosse team was supposed to break through and earn their first ever state tournament bid. Everything was in place for their success. They dominated the regular season with a 13-0 record, they drew the top seed in Section 7 and had some of the top teams from last year vacate from their section.

The North Branch girls track and field team duked it out with Chisago Lakes for the second spot in the Mississippi 8 Conference championships on Wednesday, May 22, but the Vikings fell just five points short of the ‘Cats, while both finished quite a bit behind M8C champions Monticello.

Kailee Carlson was never the star athlete in her career at Chisago Lakes High School that spanned from 2008-2012. Sure, she participated in track and field and tennis, but she didn’t make it to the state tournament, or win any major awards.

Patience is a virtue, and it certainly seemed to be the deciding virtue in North Branch’s season-opening 4-1 loss to Irondale on Friday, April 5.
It’s time to get out on the courses
It’s finally golf season! We’ve had some fun moonlighting this winter (spring I guess?) with some tee times in February, but this weekend seems to officially be the start of our nicer weather where courses will remain open throughout the year.
