Pine City 3
How were they going to respond? That was the question after falling to Spring Lake Park 8-0 their last time out.
Really, the ‘Cats didn’t have a choice, they had to be good last Friday night versus Pine City. The Dragons were their first conference opponent of the season. Chisago’s goal all along has been a conference title, and in order to reach it, the game was a must win.
Based on the first period, it looked like another loss.
Pine City rolled out of the locker room with two goals in the first frame, one shorthanded, taking a 2-1 lead after one. The lone Wildcat goal came from Craig Manthey, his sixth of the season.
However, the first was just a warm-up for the Wildcats. Twelve seconds into the second period, Nick Fisher notched his second goal of the season to tie the game 2-2. It sparked a string of six straight Chisago goals as the Wildcats buried the Dragons.
Junior Josh Angrimson scored twice during the flurry, his first two goals of the season, while Carl Hoffman, Jake Miles, and Steve Pieper also added goals. Leading 7-2 late in the third, Pine City scored a late goal, beating Chris Waltz for their third goal of the game, wrapping up the scoring in a 7-3 Chisago Lakes win.
Angrimson finished the game with two goals and two assists, while Miles and Pieper each picked up two points. Between the pipes, Waltz picked up his third win of the season, stopping 21 of 24 shots. The Wildcats moved to 1-0 in the Rum River and 4-3 overall with a non-conference battle with Cambridge-Isanti hours away.

Sevens continued to be lucky for the Wildcats last Saturday as Chisago Lakes traveled to Cambridge-Isanti, destroying the Bluejackets 7-0.
Steve Pieper got things started for the ‘Cats with a power play goal three minutes into the game, putting the Wildcats in front 1-0. The goal was the first of four straight by Pieper alone.
The Pieper show struck for all four goals in the first period, giving Chisago a 4-0 lead after one. In the second, Josh Angrimson got into the scoring act, his third goal of the weekend, extending the Wildcat lead to 5-0.
From there, Craig Manthey did the rest. Already with five assists in the game, the senior scored twice, one in the second and once more in the third, putting the finishing touches on a 7-0 Wildcat win. Manthey finished the game with seven points putting him at 20 on the season (8G-12A) through eight games. Pieper finished the game with six points, putting his season point total at 18 (12G-6A).
In the nets, senior Jordan Hawkinson was solid, stopping all 26 shots he faced, picking up his first win and shutout all in his first game of the season.
