Drive for state-Wildcats take second, Helgerson moves on
The Wildcats set the tone in day one by shooting a 315, second best behind only Grand Rapids. Chisago used their balance to tip the scales, finishing with four of its six golfers shooting an 80 or better. Erik Helgerson finished with the best round of the day for the ‘Cats, carding a 39 on the front nine followed by a 38 on the back, tying him for sixth in the individual race with a 77. Eighth grader Luke Angrimson continued to amaze, shooting a first day 78 while Jordan Hawkinson added 80.
“To put Luke in that position where he is shooting that well, I think it’s safe to say that we’ll be expecting some great things from him in the future,” commented Mark Erickson, Chisago Lakes boys golf head coach. “There is no doubt about the fact that our balance is our strength. The kids thought they could do better and our scores were consistent once again with four kids shooting 80 or below.”
Not only did the Wildcats clinch a shot at round two with their second place finish but five of the six golfers are still in the hunt for a trip to state.
“We’re in really good shape,” said Erickson. “Anywhere from one through five can make it as an individual if we can’t make it as a team. We think we can do better. We’re gunning for Grand Rapids on their own course so we know we have our work cut out for us but the kids are confident and hungry.”
As for the Vikings, paced by Tom Koep, North Branch saw three golfers shoot under 90, finishing with 351, putting them at 13th after day one. Because only the top three teams advance to round two, the Vikings were eliminated from the postseason.
Koep finished with the best round of the day, shooting a 42 on both sides of the course. The 84 put him tied for 29th at the end of the first round, only golfers with scores at 82 or lower advanced to the second round. Bryan Peters followed with a 88 while Tyler Leland carded an 89.

Round Two
They were good in round one, but in order to make up 12 strokes on Grand Rapids on their own course, in round two, the Wildcats had to take it to another level. They did, unfortunately, so did Grand Rapids.
Behind six golfers who all shot 81 or lower, Rapids advanced to the state tournament by posting a second round team score of 303, matching their score from the first round. It proved to be too much for the ‘Cats who also had a strong second round, carding a 313, finishing 22 strokes off the pace.
Slowed by an 82 in round one, Joe Stafne fought back with the ‘Cats best round on day two, shooting a 77, while Mike Tschida and Josh Angrimson followed with 78’s. All six golfers for the Wildcats shot an 82 or lower.
In the individual race, Erik Helgerson made sure that Chisago would not be shutout. Tied for sixth after day one, Helgerson posted a second round score of 80, putting him in a three-way tie for the fifth and final spot with a berth to the state tournament on the line. The senior would not be denied, winning in a playoff on the third hole, punching his ticket to the big show.
Helgerson will take the course next week at the State Golf Tournament at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids.

Near Miss- Wildcats fall short of final round, Vikings finish in the middle
Over shadowed by the boys, the Chisago Lakes girls golf team was determined to make their own noise at this year’s Section 7AA golf tournament and they did just that.
Led by Jenny Watters, the Wildcats carded a team score of 404 in the first round, 21 strokes better than their last 18-hole event at the Purple Hawk Invitational. However, the effort fell short, three strokes to be exact, finishing fourth behind Hibbing/Chisholm. Only the top three teams advance to the second round.
As for North Branch, the Vikings capped off a memorable year by finishing eighth in the 13 team event. Hanna Lindberg led the way with a 100 followed by Sara Schwalbe who posted a 103.
Individually, Jenny Watters shot at a second straight trip to state was extended another round. After carding a 42 on the front nine, Watters followed that up with a 50 on the back side, giving her a 92, two strokes ahead of the cut.
In round two on Monday, Watters started slow out of the gates, shooting a 48 on the front nine before answering back with a 42 on the back. Unfortunately, Watters' second round 90 would tie her for eleventh place, leaving her five shots short of the state tournament.
Krista Swanson of Forest Lake wrapped up the individual title by shooting an 82 on day two, giving her a two round total of 161.
