The North Branch girls tennis team wrapped up their regular season schedule with a win and a loss.

On September 29, the Vikings welcomed North St. Paul to town for their final home match of the regular season. The Vikings responded by dazzling the home crowd and their coach with a 4-3 victory.

“We played well with consistent play and great shot selection,” commented Kristen Unverzagt, North Branch girls tennis head coach. “Our first doubles had a close match and played hard despite their close loss, and third doubles came back in the first set with aggressive net play to win in two sets.”

Unverzagt is referring to Amber Heilig and Jessica Johnston who battled back to win in straight sets. Shannon O’Hern, Maren Anderson, and Danielle Sonnenfeld also picked up straight set wins.

The honeymoon didn’t last long for the Vikings as North Branch closed out their regular season three days later versus Hill-Murray, losing 5-2.

The Vikings split singles play with the Pioneers, getting straight set wins from Kelsey O’Hern and Danielle Sonnenfeld. Both won their matches 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles play, despite winning the first set, Felicia Dehart and Chantell Sampson dropped their next two sets, falling 6-4, 4-6, 5-7. The team of Katie Satterlund and Nicole Granberg also won a set before losing in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6.

“First doubles did a great job of attacking the net and staying aggressive in the first set,” remarked Unverzagt. “Despite a great effort by both doubles teams, we lost both matches in three sets. Third doubles also lost, but improved on stepping up to the net and moving together.”
