Wildcats run well at sections- boys lead the way with sixth place finish
“I thought we would do a little better. I knew it would be close between us and Hibbing but overall, I guess I thought our guys ran pretty well,” commented Orwoll. “Their times were down a little bit but they said they left it all out on the course, so at least they were going after it. That’s all you can ask as a head coach.”
Individually, John Leaf represented the Wildcats best shot at advancing to the state tournament. However, Leaf finished 16 overall, missing the top 10 by 15 seconds.
“He got nipped right at the finish line,” remarked Orwoll. There was a pack of runners right there at the end and they were just flying. The last mile went really fast. That’s what made John so frustrated because he could see the number 10 runner but he couldn’t get there. Still, he ran a great race.”
Greg Stignani followed Leaf for the ‘Cats, placing 31 overall. Ben Dery posted the next best time, finishing 35.
“Greg ran really well. He always runs tough at this time of year. Anytime the weather gets cooler he steps it up,” mentioned Orwoll. “Ben also ran well with a small hip pointer. That definitely affected him but he was able to run through it.”
Speaking of injuries, the injury bug once again decimated the Chisago Lakes girls squad. The Wildcats were only able to run four girls through, finishing with a incomplete score as a team.
“Our number one runner, Emmy Wold, could hardly walk and one of our other top runners had bronchitis (Crystal Reynolds),” said Orwoll. “Makayla Grote had a great day, she ran a personal best. She really was awesome. Sometimes with all of the injuries, you don’t know what to do. We were out there trying and that’s all you can ask. It’s been frustrating but next year is another year for the girls.”
On paper, it appears to be a better year for both squads as only three seniors graduate from this year’s team.
“It’s exciting to see those younger runners like Andrew Turner and Zach Hunter pick up over these last few weeks,” remarked Orwoll. “I just hope that somebody steps into the leadership position. The seniors this year were great leaders and we’re going to need that next year.”
