A sigh of relief-‘Cats pick up first conference win
Princeton 3
The streak is officially broken. After going seven plus years without a conference win, the Chisago Lakes girls tennis team snuck past Princeton last Monday 4-3, picking up their first conference win of the season. The “W” was far overdue.
“All of the matches were close and second and third doubles did a great job of stepping up and winning their matches,” remarked Chisago Lakes head girls tennis coach, Steve Otte. “Sami and Emily made quick work of their opponents while Rachel Nelson and Kara Orwoll put up a good fight but it didn’t go their way. There were good points being played all day long.”
Sammi Schares and Emily Caneday picked up singles wins, both taking their matches in straight sets. Caneday, who was playing number four singles, only surrendered one point, winning the match 6-0, 6-1.
Still, the match was hanging in the balance until the ‘Cats doubles play took over. After Princeton won at number one doubles, Chisago took the final two matches to earn the win. Both matches were decided in three sets.

Last Tuesday, just hours after their first conference win of the season, the Wildcats returned to the court, this time against conference power St. Michael-Albertville. Chisago was overmatched from the beginning as the Knights swept the ‘Cats 7-0. Only one match made it to three sets.
“Meg Dennison battled to a third set but it did not turn out the way we would’ve liked,” commented Otte.
The loss left Chisago with one conference match remaining this season before the conference tournament.

Last Wednesday, Chisago Lakes played their final conference match of the season before the conference tournament. Mora was welcomed to town by the Wildcats, a make-up match that was originally scheduled for September 11.
Inconsistent at times, Mora was on top of their game from the opening serve, taking all seven matched in straight sets en route to a 7-0 victory.
“Mora is a good strong team with no seniors on it,” said Otte. “We were out played by Mora. We need to keep working to improve our game.”
