With the season winding down and Mora on the radar screen, the fact that the Mustangs were Rum River rivals didn’t matter a whole lot to Shawn Frederixon and the Chisago Lakes wrestling team. In Frederixon’s words, “We’re not going to win the conference, right now, just to get a win is the most important thing.”

Okay, so it went a little farther than that. Historically solid, Mora is down this season compared to other years, giving the young Wildcats a shot at some pay back for taking it on the chin in the past.

A win and some pay back might not seem like a lot but last Thursday night, it was more than enough as the Wildcats got both, defeating Mora 39-32. Brian Jones and John Hogie kicked the match off with back-to-back pins before Mora fought back with a pin off their own. From there, the two teams battled back and forth. Over the next six matches, each team won three times, putting the Wildcat lead at 24-20 heading into the final five matches.

After a win by Bryan DeWeerd at 160 pounds, the ‘Cats put the Mustangs away with a Luke Anderson decision win, followed by six more points on an Aaron James forfeit victory. The three straight wins pushed the Wildcat lead to 39-20, enough to guarantee the win. Despite two late forfeits by Chisago, the Wildcats walked off the mat 39-32 winners.

“We figured we had a chance at beating them going in but we’ve had a lot of chances before and we never got it done,” said Frederixon, Chisago Lakes head wrestling coach. “We didn’t get upset in any of the matches and that’s really the key. In the past, it’s usually us getting upset, but this time we held on. The kids did a nice job, I think they’re going to remember that one for a long time.”

Minneapolis Edison 30

Last Saturday, the Wildcats took a break from conference and jumped right back into their extremely tough non-conference schedule. Minneapolis Edison was up first. The Tommies jumped in front early. At 112 pounds, Edison’s Terrance Young squeaked past Brian Jones thanks to a pin. Rated sixth in the state, Young pinned Jones at the 3:12 mark, putting the Tommies in front.

“Brian wrestled really well,” remarked Frederixon. “We moved him up from 103 pounds to face the sixth best 112 pound guy in the state. That’s pretty tough to handle, jumping up nine pounds to face a guy like that.”

Edison was far from finished. The Tommies rattled off the next three matches, putting them in front 21-0 before Dan Gemuenden got the ‘Cats on the board with a pin at 135 pounds. However, despite wins by Bobby Ferrier and James down the stretch, Edison was too much, picking up wins at 152 and 160 pounds, catapulting them to a 30-15 win.

“Edison is so tough top to bottom,” commented Frederixon. “They’re just so strong. Bobby Ferrier beat a really good kid at 140 pounds, but they (Edison) were just too tough.”

If Edison was tough, the Wildcats second opponent of the day, Cooper, was invincible. The Hawks rolled past the ‘Cats in devastating fashion, building a 27-0 lead before Ferrier won the Wildcats first match at 140 pounds. Even then, the match was already well in hand. Leading 27-3, Cooper won five of the final seven matches, winning 55-15. Along with Ferrier, James and Luke Anderson accounted for the Wildcats other two wins.

“They were a really tough team, they are just full of seniors on their roster,” mentioned Frederixon. “Brian Jones wrestled the number two guy in state at 103 pounds and lost by decision. We’re used to him getting us off to a good start but they’re kids out there he’s going to lose to. He wrestled a great match, it just wasn’t meant to be. It was tough for the kids but at the same time, I thought it was a great learning experience for the kids. Hopefully we can learn from it for next year.”
