All of that relief came with one win last Friday at Hibbing Holiday Tournament. Then, just for good measure, the Wildcats notched another “W”, beating Highland Park 39-26 before being thrown into the winners bracket, leading to two losses on Saturday to close out the tourney.
“It was nice to get that first win,” said Frederixon. “The kids wrestling well. We almost had White Bear Lake too, and then we wrestled Hibbing well. Hibbing was the number five team in state last week and I thought we wrestled them tough.”
The ‘Cats began the tourney with a 44-31 win over Nashwauk Keewaton Greenway in the first round, 44-31. In that match, eight Wildcats picked up wins including senior Aaron James who returned to action for the first time this season. James notched a pin in his first match, one of five pins for Chisago Lakes.
The Wildcats carried their success into match number two versus Highland Park, picking up their second win of the season. Trailing 17-11 at one point, Bobby Ferrier started the comeback with a win by decision, pulling the ‘Cats within three. Chisago Lakes went onto win five of the next seven matches, three by pins, to secure a 39-26 win. Mitch Anderson, Kevin Marquis, Kyle Hannah and James each picked up pins.
By winning two matches last Friday, the Wildcats were thrown into the winners bracket last Saturday. Their first test was White Bear Lake.
Chisago started off the match with two quick wins by decision before the Bears bit back. White Bear Lake mounted a 20-18 lead before Luke Anderson put the ‘Cats back in front with a pin at 160 pounds. However, White Bear Lake took the last four matches, three by pin and one by forfeit, earning a 44-24 win. Along with Luke Anderson, Brian Jones, Mitch Anderson, Bobby Ferrier and Kevin Marquis picked up wins for Chisago.
The last match of the tourney for the Wildcats was their toughest, paring them with perennial power Hibbing.
The Bluejackets set the tone right from the start, mounting a 21-6 lead before a Marquis pin trimmed the deficit to nine, 21-12. The win was Marquis fourth of the tourney.
Besides a Luke Anderson pin at 171 pounds, Hibbing dominated the rest of the way, taking the match 48-18.
“I was happy with the weekend, I thought the kids made some strides,” replied Frederixon. “Kevin (Marquis) had a great weekend. He showed us a small piece of his potential. Bobby (Ferrier) continued his impressive start. He is wrestling with a lot of confidence.”
Marquis and Brian Jones finished the weekend with a 4-0 record. Mitch Anderson, Luke Anderson, and Bobby Ferrier picked up three wins.
