After first loss, ‘Cats take out their frustration on Princeton
Chisago Lakes 90
The Chisago Lakes boys swimming team dove back into the pool last Tuesday versus Hudson, fresh off a 19 day lay-off. Actually, fresh isn’t the best term to use when it comes to summing up the 96-90 loss.
“Hudson was a team that was very similar to us in terms of depth and we haven’t faced someone like that yet this season,” remarked Jim Sauerbry, Chisago Lakes swimming head coach. “The times were good, but the kids weren’t excited, they didn’t look like they were in to it like they normally are. We just weren’t mentally prepared.”
While the Wildcats struggled, they still almost won. Tied 35-35 after four events, Chisago jumped in front after Brian Willhite and Jeremy Salokar went 1-2 in diving, pushing the ‘Cat lead to 43-35. A John Roggemann second in the butterfly and a Wayne Schafer first in the 100 yard freestyle helped the Wildcats keep the lead before Hudson charged back. Hudson sparked a comeback by winning the next three events before Willhite broke the string by winning the 100 yard breaststroke, pulling the ‘Cats within four. However, Hudson edged out the Wildcats in the 400 freestyle relay by less than a second, earning eight points and a tight 96-90 win.
“We had a B relay DQ. If that wouldn’t of happened, it would’ve been a dead heat,” said Sauerbry. “It was our first dual loss and I think it really emphasized to the kids that every race matters. We have kids who are going to do well every race, but it’s the B relays and the fourth and fifth place swimmers who make the difference, that’s the important thing. I think the loss reminded the kids how important those points are.”

Princeton 61
After losing a tight meet with Hudson two nights earlier, last Thursday, the ‘Cats left nothing to chance, dominating Princeton 124-61. The performance was just what Sauerbry was looking for.
“Princeton has lost some of their swimmers so their program is on a down swing right now, but the kids really swam well” remarked Sauerbry. “The kids stepped up. After being flat at Hudson, the kids were really ready to go. They were pumped from the start.”
The Wildcats swam fast and furious, winning nine of the 12 events. Wayne Schafer finished with four first place finishes while John Roggemann and Brian Willhite won three events.
“We went 1-2-3 in diving and breaststroke, I know we haven’t done that before,” commented Sauerbry. “There was connection there for the kids. They realized that everyone need to do their part in order to win and everyone did.”

Wildcats third at Bluejacket Invite
Last week finished with a blast for the Wildcats, placing second at the Bluejacket Invite last Saturday. Competing against four other school, the ‘Cats continued to show they belong.
The tone was set early. During the opening race, the Wildcats relay team of Steve Boo, Willhite, Schafer, and Roggemann, steamed to a second place finish in the 200 yard medley relay.
“We started off real strong,” said Sauerbry. “Basically, we ran out of room in the pool in the 200. We took second and I think that pumped the kids up for the rest of the meet.
It was another great meet for Schafer. Along with his second in the 200 relay, the senior won the 100 butterfly and finished second in the 50 freestyle. Also making waves was Brian Willhite who took second in the 100 breaststroke and finished first in diving, racking up an All-American consideration score of 404 points. The top 100 divers in the country are named All-American at the end of the season.
“It was nice to see him put it all together,” mentioned Lisa Willhite, Chisago Lakes diving coach and Brian’s mother. “It was the first 11 dive meet of the year. The first eight dives he did, it was the best I’ve ever seen him dive. Everyone blows one dive but he was perfect. All three guys, Brian, Adam, and Jeremy, all dove great great. They’re working hard and having fun. Hopefully they can keep it going.”
Also grabbing some attention was Steve Boo who swam a personal best in the 100 yard backstroke, shaving two seconds off his old time. And, in the 500, Andy Shaleen finished with a time of 6:26.25, seven seconds better than his Tuesday time against Hudson.
“That was a meet where we really needed our big boys and they did great,” replied Sauerbry. ‘But it was also a meet where we needed everyone to contribute. We got some critical points from a lot of different areas. Sam Tosteson got us some big points, we really swam well. It was a total team effort being able to take second.”
After swimming on the road for close to a month, the Wildcats return home this week with Fridley before hosting the Chisago Lakes Invite on Saturday. The event is scheduled to start at 10:30 A.M.
