Rodger Petryk had never seen it before. He had never seen two teams, both with full rosters, face another and have one team totally dominate the other, scoring a 55-0 win. He had seen it until last Thursday when his Chisago Lakes/St. Croix Falls boys ski team did that very thing to Coon Rapids. The course was short and the times were fast, really fast.
“Just excellent racing,” mentioned Petryk. “No one on the team make a mistake of any kind. We were really consistent. The top six skiers are establishing themselves right now, all of their times are close one another and everyone is pushing each other.
Senior Ross Stensrud took top honors, posting two runs of under 20 seconds (19.27), finishing with a total time of 38.54. Isaiah Kinzer ran second and Dan Olson placed third. The Wildcats were so fast that each of their top three skiers broke the 20 second mark while Coon Rapids fastest run of the meet was 22 seconds.
“It was good to see Ross race like that, he’s really starting to peak right now,” remarked Petryk. “I think it’s really good for Isaiah. To have a guy pushing him like that, that’s good for him. It’s really great to have competition within the team, it sets the tone.”
After Olson, Seth Kinzer finished fourth and Rob Sandgren took fifth.

Even with Brittany Nelson and Sally Bowen missing, the Chisago Lakes/St. Croix Falls girls ski team was just as effective last Thursday, defeating Coon Rapids 44-11.
Eighth-grader Katelyn Kinzer finished first, finishing with both runs under 22 seconds. Jessica Lundgren and Brianna Stoeckman ran second and third. In all, Chisago Lakes placed seven skiers in the top 10.
“We skied well, especially considering who we were missing,” said Petryk. “Brittany was gone and we lost Sally Bowen for the season (ACL). That is a huge loss to us, she had just bought brand new skies and she was really skiing well. That’s just a huge loss for us but it’s nice to know we have some girls who can fill in.”
While Bowen will not be back thanks to a knee injury, Stoeckman continued her comeback, getting closer and closer to 100 percent after a knee injury sidelined her last season.
“She is back to last year’s form,” replied Petryk. “She’s such a good racer. I was actually going to race her on JV until I found out I was missing some skiers. I just wanted to let her ease in to it, but she was ready to go, she really skied well.”

Blaine 5
Last Monday, the Wildcats skied past Blaine to keep their perfect season alive.
On the boys side, Ross Stensrud won his second consecutive meet, posting a 48.13 after two runs of under 25 seconds. His best run of the day came in at 23.84 seconds. Isaiah Kinzer ran second, less than a second off the pace. Dan Olson, Seth Kinzer, and Rob Sandgren rounded out the top five.
“Isaiah has been sick, he was off skies since last Friday, so he gutted it out,” said Petryk. “Again, our consistency is really something. It’s unbelievable to have that many guys that close. It’s such a great group to work with.”

Blaine 8
Pushed by the boys, the Chisago Lakes/St. Croix girls did not disappoint, completing the sweep over Blaine, winning 47-8 last Monday at Trollhaugen.
Brittany Nelson returned with a bang, taking first by more than two seconds. Sarah Bottjen finished second and Katelyn Kinzer ran third. In all, the Wildcats took the top five spots.
“It was nice to have Brittany back, she’s just so tough,” smiled Petryk. “Along with her, we had great balance again. I was really glad to see Brianna Stoeckman put together two good races in a row dating back to last Thursday. She’s showing me how good she really is. I was also happy to see Sarah (Bottjen) race the way she did. It’s only her second meet since coming back from vacation.”
The win now sets the table for who’s up next. Traveling to town on Thursday is Centennial, the other undefeated team in conference. For both the boys and girls squads, as Petryk puts it, “it’s for all for all the marbles.”
The meet is scheduled for 5:30 P.M at Wild Mountain.
