White Bear Lake’s Digger Carlson is making a strong push at changing the name of the Lindstrom Loppet to the Calson Classic.

Last Saturday, the 42-year-old won the 16th annual Loppet, finishing first for the second consecutive year. Carlson crossed the finish line with a time of 16:06, 18 seconds ahead of second place Chris Lutz of Pine City.

John Leaf was the highest local finisher, placing fourth overall, just seconds ahead of Dan Brelje who placed fifth. Finn Kuusisto of Shafer also finished in the top 10, taking ninth out of 193 runners.

Meanwhile, on the womens side, Stephanie Howe of Forest Lake took the top spot, running the race in 18 minutes and 33 seconds. Kristen Howe, also of Forest Lake, placed second while Laura Carlson of White Bear Lake came in third, and Katie Salvatore, last year’s winner, came in fourth.

Tracy Nelson-Bongert was highest local finisher, placing sixth overall. Nelson-Bongert is from Lindstrom. Bonna Turnquist and Jackie McMahon, also from Lindstrom, both followed placed seventh and eighth respectively. Gail Peterson and Laura Grossman rounded out the top 10.

Overall, there were 195 runners that competed in the womens division.
