McClaskie vaults his way to state

McClaskie vaults his way to state

Sprained ankle and all, Bowie McClaskie saved his best for sections. Pole vaulting with a sever sprain, McClaskie vaulted to a first place finish last week at the section 7AA track meet, qualifying him for this weeks state tournament. How high did he go? Try 13 feet seven inches- a career best.

Next up, McClaskie, the only member of the boys team to qualify for state, will compete on Friday at 10 a.m. at the National Sports Center in Blaine. The senior is seeded ninth going in.

Elsewhere, Nick Ramberg just missed the state cut-off in the 1600 run, finishing third, 15 seconds behind John Kallemeyn of Elk River. In addition, Josh Beach medaled in the 300 hurdles and high jump, Al Moore medaled in the high jump after placing fourth, and the Vikings 4 X 200 relay team also came home with a medal around their necks. The top six finishers in each event medal.

North Branch finished seventh as a team, 14 points behind Chisago Lakes.

Despite running well, Wildcats fail to get anyone to state

Speaking of Chisago Lakes...

The ‘Cats finished sixth as a team thanks to several personnel best times. However, despite the success, nobody was able to punch their ticket to the state meet.

Devin Swanberg came the closest, finishing third in the triple jump, missing out by just over an inch. The top two finishers in each event advance to the state tournament. Elsewhere, John Leaf finished fourth in the 1600 run, Chris Hitchcock ran fourth in the 110 hurdles, and Brian Arndt finished fifth in the 100 meter dash.

“Considering the competition, I was pretty pleased,” remarked Ken Orwoll, Chisago Lakes boys head track coach. “The kids ran well. Our 4 X 200 team stood out finishing second. They weren’t even close to St. Francis but they improved their time by three seconds. John Leaf had a really good day. Chris Hitchcock was excited after the hurdles, Brian Arndt finished first in the 100 meter dash, and Devin did his usual thing.”

Elk River walked away with the team title, finishing 44 points ahead of second place. The way the Elks were able to dominate is part of the reason why Orwoll and the ‘Cats found themselves smiling after the meet. Considering how good they were, the Wildcats still managed to bus home with 18 medals.

“Some kids left the meet feeling pretty good. To have Elk River and Anoka there, they competed against some pretty good teams and we also beat quite a few teams. It was a good day for us,” remarked Orwoll. “You’re always disappointed when you don’t get anybody to state. That’s the goal before the season, but our goal was also to finish high. We wanted to also get a bunch of kids on the podium. We had some kids walking around with a couple medals around their neck. All four of our relay teams had personnel bests, so you can’t finish any better than that.”
