Hawkinson ties for 57th at state meet
The senior led off the first day with a bang, hitting the first five greens. However, Hawkinson’s putting stroke was off, leading to a two over par through five holes. That trend continued for the next 13 holes. While his drives were consistent, Hawkinson’s short game put him in an early hole, placing him tied for 71st after the first round.
“I hit the wrong side of the green on my first five holes. That left me about 50 feet out and it’s hard to sink it from 50 yards away,” replied Hawkinson. “My putting let me down both days, I just couldn’t get the ball in the hole.”
The senior battled forward in round two last Wednesday, despite more troubles on the green. On his second hole of the round, Hawkinson five-putted. It was the first time that has ever happened. Still, Hawkinson found himself moving up the leaderboard as the day went on, picking up his birdie of the state tournament on his 16th hole of the day. When it was all said and done, Hawkinson finished the second round with an 83, putting him tied for 57th overall.
“I just putted terrible both days,” mentioned Hawkinson. “But I was able to come back a little bit the second day. Overall, I had fun. I just learned that I have to work on my short game for college.”
It’s just another experience Hawkinson can take into next season as a member of the Gustavus boys golf team.
“It was a good experience and I learned a lot. I guess that’s all I can ask.”
