That’s Brian Hasleiet, North Branch head track coach, referring to his girls track and field team, the same squad that rolled into Lindstrom last Tuesday and ran away with a win. The same team that posted six first place finishes and four seconds. The same team that out-distanced Pine City by nine points, winning their second meet of the season.
“We were just a little deeper. I knew we had a good chance at winning the meet,” mentioned Hasleiet. ‘The girls were excited. They really are starting to get a lot of confidence. They’re starting to realize they can compete.”
Compete they did, led by junior Jenny Anderson who took first in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles, and placed second in the high jump. In addition, Ellie Fairbanks won the 200 meter dash, Amanda Peterson out-ran everyone in the 3200 meter run, Tess Prouty-Kunshier placed first in the 400, and the 4 X 200 and 4 X 100 relay teams also won their events.
“Our relays are really coming around,”replied Hasleiet. “It has taken some time for everyone to come around. We’re starting to find our line-up. We have pretty much figured it out, the continuity is really starting to show.”
As for Chisago Lakes, behind two firsts from Kari Schmidt, one first from Amber Maher, and one first from Shana Meath, the Wildcats took third, posting 67 points.
Maher and Meath each ran their fastest times of the year in the 400 and 100 respectively, and Emmy Wold added a season best time in the mile. Sabra Beam also tossed her best distance of the year in the shot put taking second, and the 4 x 800 and 4 X 100 relays also notched season-bests.
“The weather was not as nice as our results, but the girls toughed out the cold and wind,” commented Beth Carlson, Chisago Lakes head girls track coach. “I am pleased to see so many girls having success, getting stronger, and placing higher each week. As long as we can stay healthy, we are on track.”
