Wildcats edge out Vikings, win Chisago Lakes Invite
Running in their first home meet of the season last Tuesday, the Chisago Lakes boys track and field team greeted the home crowd with a first place performance, edging out North Branch by two points in the wind and rain.
In all, the Wildcats posted six first place finishes to go along with five seconds. Junior Devin Swanberg led the way, winning the high jump and triple jump. In addition, John Leaf added a win in the 3200 meter run and Chris Hitchcock ran by the competition in the 100 meter dash. The ‘Cats also took first in the 4 X 800 and 4 X 400 meter relays.
“Devin is always solid, he’s going to give you tons of points,” said Ken Orwoll, Chisago Lakes head boys track coach. “Our relays ran well. I think in the 4 X 4 and in the 4 X 8, there is no question who the top four guys are. We’ve got some kids who are really coming along in the sprint relays as well.”
Brian Hasleiet was equally pleased with his team’s performance, even though the Vikings missed first by just two points. No matter. The Vikings looked at the meet like they have looked at every meet from the beginning of the season until now. It’s all about preparing for the True Team meet this week.
“It was kind of a work out meet for us,” said Hasleiet, North Branch head track coach. “The performances weren’t really outstanding. It got really cold. We tried some different things, looking to shore up our line-up a little bit. I was actually pretty happy to get that close to Chisago. I’m sure they’re eyeing us just like we’re eyeing them.”
In all, the Vikings posted seven first place finishes and seven seconds, including a win in the 4 X 100 relay.
“Our relays did pretty well considering how cold it was,” replied Hasleiet. “We won the 4 X 100, and our 4 X 200 team ran the best they have all year, so that was great to see. Bowie McClaskie pole vaulted really well. We actually had to stop him because of the weather, he was really close to 13 feet. He looked really good.”
McClaskie was joined in the winners’
circle by D.J Paulson, Al Moore, Zack Backus, Josh Beach, and Billy Oehlers.
