Although he didn’t admit it to his team, Brian Hasleiet didn’t have a whole lot of expectations last Saturday at the Class “AA” State True Team Track Meet. He knew the competition would be the toughest they’ve ever seen. He was right.

Facing off with the best of the best in Class “AA”, the North Branch boys track and field team finished ninth out of nine teams. Still, the experience went well beyond a place.

“It was a great experience for our kids to see that level of competition. You have some unbelievable athletes at that meet,” said Hasleiet, North Branch track and field head coach. “It was good for the program to see that level of competition, to see where we need to get to.”

Besides the weather, Mankato East and Mankato West dominated the meet. Out of the 18 events, East or West placed first in 13 of them. Meanwhile, the Vikings managed just one top five finish. That came from an injured Bowie McClaskie who took third in the pole vault.

“Bo vaulted 13 feet which was the best he’s done this year. With his ankle, we weren’t sure what he would be able to do. He toughed it out and was just awesome, he was the highlight of the meet,” commented Hasleiet. “Besides that, We really didn’t have any great performances. The weather made it tough to compete. Nick Ramberg ran well in the 1600 and 3200, and our throwers did pretty well, they scored us some points. Phil Olson actually threw himself out of the ring in the discus. He scratched, but if it would’ve counted, it probably would’ve won it for him.”

In addition, Al Moore finished seventh in the high jump, Josh Beach ran ninth in the 300 hurdles, and Billy Oehlers and Zack Backus each placed ninth in the shot put and discus respectively.

“I wasn’t disappointed with anything. I was proud to get there. I just wanted us to go out and compete hard like we’ve done all year,” replied Hasleiet. “It was hard with the conference meet being just two days before. It was hard for the kids to have two big meets in three days, they haven’t been through that before. Next time, we’ll know how to handle something like that. It was just a great experience across the board.”

Mankato East won the team total, edging out West by five points. Sartell placed third and Mahtomedi ran fourth.

For the Vikings, the North Branch Invite is next. Sections follow beginning on June 2nd.
