When taking into account that in past years the Wildcats have lost to Cambridge 10-0, 11-0, and 8-0, a 4-0 loss might actually be a win for the Chisago Lakes girls soccer team; or at least a tie from a moral standpoint.
“Improvement is being shown,” said Brett Kjos, Chisago Lakes girls soccer head coach.
Last Thursday versus Cambridge-Isanti, the ‘Cats opened up their 2004 season with that in mind- improving from game to game. Considering how young they are, that’s the most important thing according to Kjos.
The Bluejackets started the game with a strong offensive attack, spending most of the first half attacking the Wildcat net. That pressure paid off, leading to three first half goals, giving Cambridge a 3-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Bluejackets managed one more, completing the 4-0 win. For the game, the Wildcats were outshot 12-3.
“That game was a real eye-opener for some of our newest varsity players,” mentioned Kjos. “Just the speed and the skill required to play at the varsity level was a shock to some. That really showed in the first half. We were nervous and tense and really did not play too well. But in the second half, we settled down and started to play some soccer.
“We still have a lot of work ahead of us and we’re looking to improve every game,” continued Kjos. “I am hoping that our younger players will step up and improve every game.”
