Chisago Lakes 27

Mora 26

Late in the fourth quarter, the fans had already bit their fingernails plum down to their finger tips.

That was before the Mustangs scored a touchdown with less than 15 seconds left, pulling within one. By the time the Mustangs decided to go for two, and the win, the fans had drawn blood.

Then, after their two point conversion failed and Mora recoverd the onside kick with less than 10 seconds left, most fans bit straight down to the bone.

Fortunately for them, most fans decided to delay their trip to the hospital just long enough to see the Mustangs hook-n-ladder play fail, clinching a 27-26 Wildcat win. However once the final gun sounded, the race was on to the emergency room.

It was that exciting! Truly, no matter what side of the field you found yourself on last Friday night, whether they were wearing green or blue, the game was deemed one of the best in recent memory. Even Chisago Lakes head coach Bill Weiss found it difficult to sum up after the game- all he could do was smile. Of course it helped that the ‘Cats finished on the winning side of it, picking up their first victory of the season.

“I thought we came out with a lot of aggression,” said Weiss. “We had a lot more aggression than we did the week before (against Foley). We were playing at a different level of intensity.”

“The second half, we just got into a better flow. Sometimes with an option offense, it takes a while to get into the flow of things. You need to be patient,” remarked Weiss.

We re-affirmed out commitment to playing physical football,” commented Weiss. “We were feeling confident with where we were at, we just were trying to get on track.”

“We were fortunate because we always had our offense there to respond. Defensively, we made some mistakes, we learned some things,” remarked Weiss. “Luckily we came away with a win, but I don’t think anybody pushed the panic button. Most of the guys who were playing were seniors and they’ve been through it. These guys have high expectations of themselves. They stepped up when they needed to.”

“Robbie Sandgren obviously stood out on all sides of the ball, offense, defense and special teams.Devin Swanberg came up huge also. He had one of the best kicking nights I’ve ever seen someone have during my time here. He kicked two field goals, he’s averaging close to 40 yards per punt, and his kick-offs were huge- one even went out of the end zone. That’s so important when it comes to field position,” said Weiss. “Also, we had some great returns. The entire kick-off team stepped up and really played well. Our special teams were solid.”

“We felt it was our time,” replied Weiss. “The first week was tough. We really felt rotten, it left a bad taste in our mouths. We wanted to redeem ourselves and I think we did that a little bit.”
