Lakes Area Police K-9 Unit scored its best ever at Regional Field Trials
The three day event judged his abilities in the following areas: obedience, agility equipment, suspect searching, article searches, apprehensions, handler protection and apprehension with gun fire. Certification is completed once a year for patrol work and once a year for narcotics. Khan is certified in patrol and narcotics and has been every year since he started.
Last November Khan represented this community on a national level in Huntsville, Ala. He competed in the USPCA National Dog Trials and was up against dogs from all over the nation and some dogs from Canada. Khan scored in the top 50 percent of 135 dogs. He scored his personal best of 618 out of 700. Khan received a National Certificate of Excellence.
Khan started with the Lindstrom Police Department in 2002 and is a 6-1/2 year old German Shepherd. He weighs about 90 lbs. He trains about 16 hours a month with many different agencies to maintain his skills. He practices everything from finding drugs to tracking criminals or missing children. Khan also assists other agencies that do not have K9 services available to them.
Handler, Officer Roettjer, received several donations that have helped to get equipment and food for the K-9 Unit with no cost to the department.
