The Chisago Lakes swimmers and divers participated in the State Swimming and Diving Meet November 21-23 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Their efforts gained them 22 points, good enough 26th place in the Class A meet. Visitation High School swam away with the meet, amassing 292 points to second place Breck School’s 193.

Divers

The diving competition started with 32 divers (four from each section). The field is narrowed to 20 after the preliminary round of five dives. Four more are eliminated during the semi-final round of three dives.

That leaves 16 divers in the final three dive round. The points earned in each round are added to the each diver’s total and her cumulative score determines her position after every round.

The Wildcats were led by Erica Greene. Lauren Trudeau, the other Chisago senior, also qualified for the finals. Ninth grader Ana Peltier was eliminated in the preliminary round.

Greene was in first place after the preliminary five dives with a score of 181.40. Trudeau’s 132.80 put her in 17th place at the same point in the competition. Peltier, one of only three ninth graders to make it to the State meet, earned 119.30 points in the preliminaries. That put her in 24th place.

Greene was second to Blake diver Julie Brummond after eight dives. At that point, Brummond led Greene by 278.00 to 270.40. Meanwhile, Trudeau’s 217.95 had moved her all the way to 12th position.

By the time the final 16 divers had completed all 11 dives, Greene had 358.70 and had secured the fourth place medal. Trudeau finished 15th with 290.15.

“Erica dove very well,” said Wildcat diving coach Lisa Willhite. “It just happened that the girls who finished second and third completed dives with greater degrees of difficulty - and completed them well.”

Willhite went on to explain that she’ll miss both Greene and Trudeau. “I’ve been with them since sixth grade. I couldn’t be more proud of both of them. They’re great people.

“They’re not done diving. Both will dive in college.”

Fans should not be discouraged that the two seniors will be leaving. “We have quite a tradition of divers,” Willhite continued. “We have a bunch of young ones coming in.”

Swimmers

In the swimming events, Emily Stein was the lone Wildcat to make it to the finals. The Chisago Lakes junior swam the 100 freestyle in 55.91 in her preliminary heat Tuesday. That time put her in 13th place. In Wednesday’s final, Stein covered the distance in 56.01, for 12th place.

Lauren Koch just missed advancing to the finals in the 200 individual medley. Her 2:24.47 put her in 17th, only 1.1 seconds away from qualifying for Wednesday’s finals. In the 500 freestyle, the Wildcat junior swam her race in 5:42.49. While this was one her best times, it was not fast enough to send her to the final 16.

The Wildcat 200 freestyle relay team, senior Caitlin Cunningham, Stein, sophomore Leah Secord and Koch, were timed at 1:44.98. That left them in 21st place and out of the finals. The same four swimmers finished the 400 freestyle relay in 3:59.12. Coincidentally, their time put them 21st in this relay, also.

Although the Wildcat swimmers did not bring home medals, they turned in some of their best times of the season and represented their school and community very well. Congratulations to the entire team and head coach Ed Wakefield and diving coach Willhite.
