The Wildcats trailed 4-0 after two innings, with two of the runs scoring in the bottom of the second on a dropped fly ball in center field. The Wildcats made a move to get back into the game in the top of the third. With the bases loaded and two outs, Mike Welle singled to right to score Jason Kelly and Bob LeVasseur to pull the Wildcats within two runs.
But everything came undone for the Wildcats in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs and a runner on first, the Totino Grace batter hit a fly ball to left that looked like it would end the inning. But the Wildcat left fielder dropped the ball to keep the inning alive, and the floodgates opened. Totino Grace scored eight unearned runs on six hits, two walks and two more Wildcat errors. By the time the inning finally ended the Wildcats trailed by ten runs. The Wildcats went out one-two-three in the top of the fifth and the ten-run rule was applied, so the final score remained Totino Grace 12, Wildcats 2.
