Once again, the Wildcats showed their opponents that they’re not just a hitting team- they can pitch as well. And once again, Derrick Olson was the teacher, pitching a complete game last Thursday against Princeton, allowing seven hits and zero runs. The senior also struck out 10 in the game. Chisago needed just one run to win and that’s what they got, keeping their perfect record in tact with a 1-0 win.

In terms of offense, the game came down to the bottom of the first when the Wildcats scored their first and only run. After Zack Stimson led the game off with a single, Unger moved him to third with a double. The next batter, Kyle Collins, then pushed a fly to right, just deep enough to score Stimson from third for a 1-0 lead. After that, Chisago was quiet with the bats, managing just four base runners the rest of the game and only one hit. Fortunately, it was still enough.

You can thank Olson for that who was sensational on the mound. Despite allowing a runner to get on base in four of the seven innings, Olson made his pitches count when they needed to. The Tigers got five runners in scoring position in four different innings, and three times, Olson extinguished the threat with a strikeout to end the Princeton rally.

“That was a great game,” mentioned Collins. “Derrick Olson really gutted that one out. It was his third consecutive shutout. I thought he might have been done at the end of five. The momentum belonged to Princeton. Derrick struck out the side in the sixth to send a message that he was in control.”

In control indeed. The win pushed the Chisago record to 11-0 on the season, jumping their conference mark to 8-0. All of that despite having their worst offensive performance of the season, but then again, that’s the sign of a good team adjust and adapt.

“The game started out great offensively. Stimson singled, Unger doubled and Kyle got a sacrifice fly,” mentioned Collins. “Then the bats went silent. I guess we knew with Derrick on the mound, that would be enough.”
