North Branch gymnastics coach Holly Saunders is excited about the improvement her team has shown in recent weeks. “We’ve been doing great,” Saunders reports.

The return of Alyssa Houle, who’d missed several meets due to an ankle injury, has been a real boost to the team and, with her help, the team’s scores have shown significant improvement.

Thursday January 19, the Vikings hosted Spring Lake Park and came away with a 123.175 - 87.65 win over the Panthers. The team earned 32.8 points on the vault, 31.95 in the floor exercise, 29.25 on the bars and 29.175 on the beam. Houle won the all-around with a score of 34.0. Teammate Kelsey Lloyd (32.3) was second, Sophia Kneen (29.125) was fourth and Darbi Berkman (26.95) fifth.

At the Princeton Invitational, Saturday, January 21, North Branch was fifth of nine teams with a total score of 126.050. Wayzata won the event with 140.6 points. The team had a very strong showing in the floor exercise with 33.575. On the vault, the Vikings scored 32.025, 30.850 on the bars and 29.600 on the beam. Houle led the North Branch all-arounders with 33.825. Lloyd was right behind with 33.350, Kneen earned 29.375 and Sam Jannings totaled 29.250.

Rush City/Pine City/Hinckley-Finlayson outscored North Branch 134.825 to 122.175 Tuesday, January 24 at Rush City. The team earned its highest score, 32.575, on the vault. Its next highest score, 31.075, was in the floor exercise. The Vikes earned 29.65 on the bars and 28.85 on the beam. Kelsey Lloyd had the Vikings’ best all-around score with 33.575. Jannings and Kneen had identical 30.275 all-around scores.

Thursday, January 26, the team had its best score of the year as it beat Fridley 127.05 to 109.95. The team scored 32.8 points in the floor exercise, 32.6 on the Vault, 31.35 on the bars and 30.3 on the beam. Houle won the all-around competition with 33.8. Lloyd had 33.725 for second, Jannings was fifth with 29.85 and Kneen’s 29.675 placed her in sixth.

The 127.05 was the best for a Viking team in at least two years. “We beat last year’s high score, which was 126.225, and almost beat the all-time North Branch best of 128.3,” said Saunders.
