The Spring Lake Park Panthers beat the Wildcat boys’ basketball team 65-63 at SLP Tuesday, February 14.

As the final score would indicate, this was a very entertaining high school basketball game. The Panthers threatened to pull away in both halves, but the ‘Cats stayed mentally tough and came back in each case.

“Neither team deserved to lose this game,” said Chisago Lakes head coach Herb Jangor. “ I told the team after the game that we didn’t lose the game, the other team beat us.”

Both teams played very well on the offensive end and there was no lack of effort by either defense.

SLP held a 33-32 halftime lead. Jason Kellum had eight first period points, including two three pointers. Andy Olness added six before the break and Brian Jennissen matched Chris Golv’s five.

The game was close most of the second period and the Wildcats had put themselves up by five with two minutes to go. However, two missed layups, two missed freethrows, two turnovers and a missed four foot jumper cost Chisago the chance to win.

“We played two solid halves, but we missed some easy opportunities at the end. We could have won this game, but we didn’t slam the door,” added Jangor. “Nobody took over for us at the end. We needed points out of our scorers in the last few minutes and we didn’t get ‘em”

“On the bright side, we didn’t get down on ourselves like we did against Somerset. Olness, Golv and Kellum played well and Bouwens did a nice job running the offense, again. It was good to have Maher back, but he’s not 100 percent, yet.”

Wildcats vs. Columbia Heights

It was -13 and the wind was howling out of the northwest, Friday, February 18, as the Chisago Lakes boys’ basketball team took the floor in the Wildcat gym. The Hylanders from Columbia Heights took an early lead and took home a hard fought 53-42 win.

Heights scored first. Jason Kellum tied the score for the ‘Cats. Justin Rivard tied it at four at the 14:00 mark. A minute later, a Cory Claeson drive balanced the scoreboard at six. A Troy Aadland assist to Andy Olness brought the Wildcats to within two (10-8) with 10:00 remaining in the half.

Midway through the half, the Hylanders had built a 14-8 lead when Wildcat senior center Trevor Johnson went high to clean the glass. He turned and spotted Tyler Bouwens breaking past the timeline. Johnson hit Bouwens on a post pattern, who cradled the reception at the top of the key and beat the defense for an easy two.

The play excited the crowd and sparked a Chisago rally that gave the ‘Cats an 18-16 lead with 3:40 on the clock. In that span, Taylor Jones converted two from the freethrow line and followed with a nice baseline drive that ended in two. Chris Golv scored next on a breakaway to tie it at 16. The lead came when Claeson hit Olness with a pass for a layup.

Three Heights freethrows and a short jumper put the Hylanders up 21-18 with 40 seconds left. Golv put his team within one with two charity tosses with 9.3 remaining. CH completed the scoring with a drive at the buzzer to give the Hylanders a 23-20 halftime advantage.

The second half belonged to the Hylanders. The Wildcats were unable to find any offensive rhythm and Heights scored enough to come away with the win.

“For what ever reason, we didn’t come to play. It was just one of those nights. Over the long season, this was one of the few times when we weren’t ready to play,” Jangor commented.
