The Chisago Lakes/Pine City Wildcats girls hockey team scored three goals in a one-minute span early in the first period and goalie Erica Pitzen stopped all 23 shots in her first varsity start as the Wildcats cruised to a 6-0 victory over the Duluth Denfeld Hunters. The game was played at the DECC Arena in Duluth Tuesday, January 17.

Morgan Baumgard started the Wildcats’ first period scoring binge. Annie Fredrickson fed Lexy Parenteau down low, and Parenteau hit Baumgard racing down the slot. Baumgard fired the puck into the net for a 1-0 lead at the 4:06 mark. Just 18 seconds later Fredrickson scored a wraparound goal to put the Wildcats up 2-0. Parenteau scored at the five minute mark as she skated end-to-end down the right side, cut through the middle and rifled it back into the far side of the net to give the Wildcats a quick 3-0 lead.

On the power play just over three minutes later, Ariel Novak took the puck, weaving end to end down the right side, she cut to the middle at the goal line and stuffed the puck in the net from point blank range to put the Wildcats up by four at the halfway mark of the first period. The Hunters’ coach had seen enough. He called a timeout after Novak’s goal and exhorted his team to get their act together. The Hunters settled down after the pep talk and played well, with neither team scoring for the next one-and-one-half periods.

But the Wildcats got on the board quickly to start the third period. Pine City’s Rhiannon Sauter picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone, skated into the left circle and shot low to the short side, beating the Hunter goalie to put the Wildcats up 5-0 at the 29 second mark. And Pine City’s Christina Borich, a sophomore, capped off the scoring with her first varsity goal just a few minutes later as she put a rebound of freshman Katie Peterson’s shot through the goalie’s five-hole. It was Peterson’s first varsity assist, and the goal made the final score Chisago Lakes 6, Duluth Denfeld 0.

“In addition to being goalie Erica Pitzen’s first varsity start,” said assistant coach Jim Gawreluk, “it was only her second varsity game appearance of the year. And she stood on her head, really making some nice saves to earn the shutout. She still hasn’t let in a goal in her two varsity appearances this season. And it was nice to see the scoring spread out. We had goals from six different players, including three from the first line.

Benilde-St. Margaret’s 6, Chisago Lakes/Pine City 0

The Wildcats, who played well in a 4-2 loss to the Benilde-St. Margaret’s Red Knights earlier this season, never quite got it all together as they were outshot 47-16 and lost to the Red Knights 6-0 at St. Louis Park Arena Saturday, January 21.

The Red Knights scored two goals in each of the game’s three periods. “Benilde played an awesome game,” said Wildcat head coach Al Magnuson. “I never thought a team could play that well against us.” Gawreluk echoed Magnuson’s sentiments. “They just passed, passed, passed and really moved the puck well,” he said.

“Our goalie, Jackie Weiden, played an awesome game just to keep the score at 6-0,” said Magnuson. “She smothered a lot of first shots to avoid rebounds. But we were flat as a team.” Assistant coach Magnuson, who’s been around the Wildcat program for a number of years, said it was the worst game he’d ever seen the girls play. “We didn’t react, we didn’t hustle,” said Josh Magnuson. “Hopefully, we can forget this one and play well in our four remaining regular season games as we get ready for sections.”

The Wildcats have two conference games this week. They were scheduled to host Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony at Chisago Lakes Arena Tuesday, January 24. The Wildcats beat Spring Lake Park 6-0 earlier this season. The Wildcats then go on the road to take on the St. Louis Park Orioles Friday, January 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the St. Louis Park West Arena. They beat the Orioles 5-1 in December.
