“He played better than 75,” said Wildcat coach John Hawkinson. “He could have scored even lower. That first day, he made just enough putts to keep his momentum going. Momentum is tough to get and even tougher to hold on to.”
The second day didn’t go quite as well for Angrimson. He got off to a bad start on Wednesday and ended with an 82. His tee ball on the first hole drifted right and ended up behind a tree. A good up and down from a greenside bunker resulted in a bogey.
Pars on two and three seemed to put the lanky junior back on track. However, consecutive sixes stole the roll and he was unable to recover. On the par five fourth, his drive found the pines to the right. A well played second shot put him in the middle of the fairway and gave him a good chance to recover.
“He had his hands on his wedge too many times,” said Hawkinson, referring to Angrimson’s approaches. His third shot was just right of the green and he didn’t put the fourth close enough to save par. On five, he pulled his drive OB left. The second tee shot was perfect, but hitting your third shot from the tee makes always makes it tough.
Angrimson was erratic off the tee the second day. His driver had put him in trouble on four and five. On six, it set him up dead center, 300 plus, with a chance to get a stroke or two back. His second shot, on the par five, bounced just in front of the green and ran to the back, right corner of the green. The eagle putt, up and over a ridge, hit the hole, but had too much pace and the eagle chance was gone. The comeback birdie putt didn’t fall and a par was recorded.
The rest of the round went much the same way. “He’s long enough that he should be able to score better. He likes to play aggressive, but he needs to work more with his wedges,” the coach added. “He didn’t hit it close enough from inside 100 yards. He really made some things happen on the first day. With work on his short game, he should be able to score very well. He’s loose and has a good attitude. If he spends enough time on the course, he’ll continue to improve.”
Although the 82 dropped Angrimson in the individual standings, the experience should help in 07. Few of us would be disappointed with a 157 for 36 holes at Bunker Hills. Congratulations!
