The Chisago Lakes girls’ basketball team made its debut under new coach Liz Mundahl by taking third place in the Red Wing Tournament. Friday, November 24, the Wildcats lost to the host Wingers 52-39. In the third place game, November 25, the CL girls picked up their first win of the season by beating Waseca 62-47.

Despite 16 points and 10 rebounds from 5-10 senior Jess Peterson, Red Wing pulled away in the second half to win the first game of the season for both teams.

“We beat ourselves,” said Mundahl.  “We didn’t play smart. Our decision making hurt us.  We didn’t move the ball on offense and our post players didn’t touch the basketball enough.”

Failure to get the ball inside contributed to a poor shooting performance by the Wildcats. “We shot 24 percent from the field.  Our defense was great in the first half. We forced them into either a turnover or one shot. But, we let up on the defensive end in the second half. Red Wing is a good team and has great shooters.  The difference in the second half is that they capitalized and we didn’t,” the coach added.

The Waseca game was close at halftime, but the Wildcats outscored the Bluejays 35-24 in the second half to even their record at 1-1.

“We talked a lot about defensive pressure before the game on Saturday and what it should look like.  I told the players they needed to be ‘dead tired’ when they came off the floor,” said Mundahl.

“We had a quicker sub rotation, which worked well for our style of defense.  Our defense won the game for us.  We played aggressive, team defense for 36 minutes and that was the key.  Megan Corradi (14 points) played very well on both ends.  We bounced back! The girls were mentally tough, and it showed.

“This was a good tournament for us.  We learned a lot...both about basketball and our teammates,” the coach continued.

Jess Peterson’s 19 points led the Wildcats, again, and put her over 1000 for her career. Her 10 rebounds were also tops for the ‘Cats. Kori Sells collected seven boards and added 10 points.
