The Minnesota legislature is in the final stages of passing a major tax hike. Relax, it probably won't affect you or me. That is unless you make $250,000 annually. (If that is the case, are you looking for a gardener or a pool boy?) The good people at the Capitol are looking to put Minnesota on top of the nation's highest tax bracket for upper income levels. Now for the upside, the bill would funnel $444 million into preschool through college education. The bill would tax those people a staggering 9.7 percent, higher than any other state in the union.
Here is my point of view (again, for whatever it's worth). So, we go ahead and tax these individuals -- fine. We raise millions for education -- fantastic. We take in so many taxes from the wealthy that we are able to hold or even decrease college tuition -- terrific. Now -- what is the state's tax base going to look like when these so called "Fat Cats" get so fed up with their special tax bracket that they decide to up and leave the great state of Minnesota? Maybe they don't just move themselves, maybe they move their companies too. Now instead of having money to throw around, the state could find itself looking to fill the millions and millions lost to wealthy individuals who have left for greener pastures. Something to think about.
If you have young children that love Easter (and what child doesn't), make sure to take them to Zion Lutheran Church this Saturday. The good people at Zion will be holding an Easter egg hunt from 9-11 a.m. The hunt will be for preschool through second graders and will feature a hunt, coloring eggs, an Easter story and a puppet show.
I hope you and your family have a wonderful Easter and get to spend some time with the ones you love.
